What materials will I need?

You will need the following materials to complete this course successfully:

  • a reliable computer, and
  • an Internet connection (preferably high-speed).
  • Fundamental Accounting Principles, 19th edition by Wild, Shaw & Chiappettta (ISBN: 0073366285)
  • Connect (for online Homework)
  • calculator
  • Microsoft Excel (can use a lab if necessary)
  • PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer (viewer available for free—see the list of links at the end of the page),

I strongly advise you to wait until you have a good Internet connection and the time required to be successful before taking this course.

Will I have to meet face-to-face with the instructor or other students?

Our one and only face-to-face meeting is a mandatory course orientation:

·         If you live within driving distance of SJC, I've scheduled an in-person orientation for Monday, August 24 at 5:30 p.m. in a room to be announced through email.

  • If you live outside of driving distance of SJC or will be unable to attend the in-person orientation, e-mail me with times you are available for a phone orientation. Ideally this should take place before classes begin but either Monday or Tuesday of the first week of classes will also be fine.

During the orientation, you will learn how to log in and navigate through the course's online classroom. No two online courses are ever set up in the same way. The orientation will make all the difference in your comfort level and in your ability to do well in the course. You will submit all assignments to me through the Angel and Connect sites for this class; I will explain the process for doing this during orientation.

NOTE: You will not have access to the course until go through an orientation.

Will the course be hard for me?

Although this is the second part of the introduction to accounting – perhaps because it is a continuation course – ACCT 202 can be a difficult course, whether it’s taken online or in the classroom. During the semester, you will need to read chapters 13-25 from your textbook, view PowerPoint presentations, go through tutorials, do homework assignments, take timed chapter quizzes, and complete a project that requires a substantial amount of time.

It takes time and commitment however, so make sure you are prepared for this challenging class.

Students who can follow written instructions, learn through reading on their own, and complete all of the assignments have the best chance of succeeding. Along with the assignment load, working online can be a challenge. Computer-savvy students who are comfortable with the keyboard do best. If you don't learn well on your own or are unsure of yourself on the computer, you should reconsider whether you are suited for this course right now. To help you determine whether an online course is the right choice for you, look over the “Online Readiness Checklist” under “Getting Started” on the SJC Virtual Campus webpage. See the list of links at the end of the page to go to "Getting Started."

A tutor is also available in room 1220. I strongly recommend you use this valuable asset the college provides for free.

How much time will I have to spend per week on this course?

You will need to spend approximately 12+ hours on this online course. On-line courses aren’t easier. In fact, many students find them actually more difficult because they don’t have the regular face-to-face instructor contact and the support of other students. An in-class version of ACCT 202 meets 4 hours per week. As a rule, for every hour you are in class, you need to spend a minimum of 2 hours studying. So, 4 + (4 x 2) = 12 hours per week. The project may require extra time. I want you to succeed, so don't sign up for the course unless you are able to commit ALL of the necessary time.

Can I go at my own pace?

NO. The course is divided into 13 chapters. The assignments are posted for the whole semester; you will be able to proceed through them ahead of schedule, if you would like.

Assignments are expected to be turned in as outlined in the Course Timeline (usually by Monday 10:00 am and Wednesday 11:55 pm). Late assignments or exams are not acceptable. Exams will be taken in the Testing Center (or by proctor for distance students) and are due on a Saturday.

Quick Studies are graded on completeness (0, 50, 100), problems and exercises are graded on correctness and the best 10 of 13 can be used to replace one exam. Quizzes (best 10 of 13), Discussion Problems (3), Exams (4), Project (2) and a Final Exam (1) comprise the remainder of the points.

What do I need to do if I decide to take this course?

The course space is limited. If you enroll and then don’t participate, or drop the course early on, you will deprive another student (who may not have other options for completing the course) of this opportunity. If you are serious about taking ACCT 202 online, follow these steps:

  1. Register for the course!

  2. Purchase the required textbook. This is available at the college bookstore. For bookstore hours, visit the bookstore website. A link to this site is provided at the end of this page.

  3. Attend the mandatory orientation. If you won’t be able to attend, e-mail me with availability times and your address so that we can do a phone orientation (see "Will I have to meet face-to-face with my instructor or other students?" above).
