Child Growth and Development  3 Credits

ECED 225

Judy S. Hudson

What is this course?

The course is ECED 225 Child Growth and Development.  This class will provide you with a firm grounding in knowledge of the child, from conception to age nine—a must for teachers, social workers, and others who work with the young child.

What are the prerequisites?

You must have passed English 099 Basic Composition or its equivalent. Early Childhood majors must pass this class with a C or higher.

When does this course begin and end?

The course begins Aug. 24 and December 11.  YOUR SHOULD HAVE THE TEXT BELOW WHEN THE CLASS STARTS ON June 9.

Who is teaching this course?

The instructor is Judy. Hudson. Mrs. Hudson is the director of early childhood education at San Juan College.  She has previously taught on-line classes in early childhood education. She holds a master’s degree in early childhood special education and a credential in public school administration, as well as extension experience working with the young child.

For more information about the course, you can email her at hudsonj@sanjuancollege.edu.

What materials will I need?

You will need the following materials to complete this course successfully:

  • Berger, Laura; The Developing Child , available from the SJC bookstore.  If you order this book from other sources, be advised that delivery often takes as long as 3 weeks unless you pay the expedited delivery charge.
  • Microsoft Word (not Microsoft Works or WordPerfect),
  • PowerPoint Program:  you will need to create a power point ( ONLY the viewer available for free—see the list of links at the end of the page),
  • a reliable computer, and an Internet connection (preferably high-speed).

Your instructor strongly advises you to wait until you have a Microsoft Word and good Internet connection before taking this course.

Will I have to meet face-to-face with the instructor or other students?

This course requires that you complete the online orientation, whilch will be on the Homepage for the class June 9.  Plan to log in and take complete the orientation process on June 9.

You will not have access to the course until you go through an orientation. An online orientation is available that meets this requirement.

Will the course be hard for me?

Whether online or in the classroom, ECED 225 can be a difficult course. During the semester, you will have to read several chapters from your textbook, visit various websites, view PowerPoint presentations, go through tutorials, take practice quizzes, complete several lengthy writing assignments. Students who can follow written instructions and learn through reading on their own have the best chance of succeeding. Along with the assignment load, working online can be a challenge. Computer-savvy students who are comfortable with the keyboard do best.

If you don't learn well on your own or are unsure of yourself on the computer, you should reconsider whether you are suited for this course right now. To help you determine whether an online English course is the right choice for you, look over the “Online Readiness Checklist” under “Getting Started” on the SJC Virtual Campus webpage. See the list of links at the end of the page to go to "Getting Started."

How much time will I have to spend per week on this course?

You will need to spend as much time on this online course as you would in any writing course. An in-class version of ECED 225 meets 3 hours per week. As a rule, for every hour you are in class, you need to spend a minimum of 2 hours studying. So, 3 + (3 x 2) = 9 hours per week. Don't sign up for the course unless you are able to commit a great deal of time to it.

Can I go at my own pace?

No, this class does not work well as a self-paced class because the assignments build upon one another. You will need feedback on earlier assignments before you can complete later assignments successfully. With the amount of work involved in the course, deadlines will help you stay on track. Since this course attempts to replicate the environment in the workplace, the instructor will not allow late work, but will allow students to work ahead of schedule.

What do I need to do if I decide to take this course?

The course space is limited—if you enroll and then don’t participate, or drop the course early on, be aware that you are depriving another student (who may not have other options for completing the course) of this opportunity. If you are serious about taking ECED 225 online, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for the course!

  2. Purchase the required textbook. They are both available at the college bookstore. For bookstore hours, visit the bookstore website. A link to the bookstore is provided at the end of this page.
