What materials will I need?

You will need the following materials to complete this course successfully:

  • TEXT: Couchenor, D. & Chrisman, K. (2008). Families, Schools, and Communities Together

for young children. Third Edition. Clifton, Park, N.Y.: Thomson Delmar

Learning.

  • Microsoft Word (not Microsoft Works or WordPerfect),
  • PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer (viewer available for free—see the list of links at the end of the page),
  • a reliable computer, and
  • An Internet connection (preferably high-speed).

Your instructor strongly advises you to wait until you have a good Internet connection before taking this course.

Will I have to meet face-to-face with the instructor or other students?

No, although the instructor will be available by appointment.  You will correspond with the instructor using the internal email in the course.

Will the course be hard for me?

ECED 235 can be a difficult course. During the semester, you will have to read several chapters from your textbooks, visit various websites, view PowerPoint presentations,  work with other students, complete several lengthy  assignments, and interact by doing interviews.. Students who can follow written instructions and learn through reading on their own have the best chance of succeeding. Along with the assignment load, working online can be a challenge. Computer-savvy students who are comfortable with the keyboard and the required software do best.

If you don't learn well on your own or are unsure of yourself on the computer, you should reconsider whether you are suited for this course right now. To help you determine whether this course is the right choice for you, look over the “Online Readiness Checklist” under “Getting Started” on the SJC Virtual Campus webpage. See the list of links at the end of the page to go to "Getting Started."

How much time will I have to spend per week on this course?

You will need to spend as much time on this course as you would in any face-2-face art or design course. An in-class version of ECED 235 would meet 3 hours per week. As a rule, for every hour you are in class, you need to spend a minimum of 2 hours studying. So, 3 + (3 x 2) = 9 hours per week. Most of the time it will take 10 to 12 hours to complete weekly assignments and projects.  Don't sign up for the course unless you are able to commit a great deal of time to it.

Can I go at my own pace?

No, because the assignments build upon one another. You will need feedback on earlier assignments before you can complete later assignments successfully. With the amount of work involved in the course, deadlines will help you stay on track. Since this course attempts to replicate the environment in the workplace, the instructor will not allow late work, but will allow students to work ahead of schedule.

What do I need to do if I decide to take this course?

The course space is limited to 20 students—if you enroll and then don’t participate, or drop the course early on, be aware that you are depriving another student (who may not have other options for completing the course) of this opportunity. If you are serious about taking ECED 235 – Family and Community Collaboration follow these steps:
