PHYSICS 111 Section 063 (PHYS-111-063), Fall 2009

Instructor: Jeffrey Wood, Email: woodj@sanjuancollege.edu

What is this course?

A primarily conceptual approach to classical physics intended for non-science majors who have not had high school physics.  In this course you will explore physical principles such as Force, Angular Momentum, Gravitation, Conservation of Energy and Momentum, Heat, Sound, Matter, Light, and Electricity and Magnetism. This course is not a lab science course and does not fulfill the requirement for lab sciences in the Associate of Arts degree.

What are the prerequisites and enrollment requirements?

Pre-requisites: Math 096 or higher within the last three years, or Math Accuplacer placement, RDNG 095 or higher, or reading Accuplacer placement.

Enrollment requirements: Permission is required for enrollment and preference will be given to Physical Therapist Assistant Program (PTAP) students. See below for enrollment contact information:

·         Permission for enrollment of PTAP students is coordinated through Dr. Wendy Bircher: bircherw@sanjuancollege.edu

·         Permission for enrollment of non-PTAP students is coordinated through Dr. Jeffrey Wood: woodj@sanjuancollege.edu

When does this course begin and end?

This course follows the academic calendar for the semester, August 24 – December 16, 2009.

Who is teaching this course?

Dr. Jeffrey Wood, School of Science faculty.

What materials will I need?

Textbook:  Conceptual Physics 10th ed. by Paul G. Hewitt. Pearson/Addison Wesley ISBN: 0-8053-9375-7 (required).

Available in the bookstore bundled with Practicing Physics 10th ed. by Paul G. Hewitt. Pearson/Addison Wesley ISBN: 0-8053-9198-3 (optional).

Calculator: Scientific calculator (an inexpensive, non-graphing type is sufficient)

Will I have to meet face-to-face with the instructor or other students?

No face-to-face meetings are scheduled or required.

Will the course be hard for me?

This course covers a large volume of diverse material.  You will need to study a minimum of 15 hours a week reading the book, working on assignments, and preparing for tests.  The course consists of seven units that each requires homework problems, participation in a discussion board, a report, a quiz, and a test.  These assignments are based on comprehension and application of assigned reading.

Reading, writing, and keyboarding skills are essential to success in this class.  Additionally, students need a reliable computer, broadband internet connection, and strong self-discipline.

If you are unsure about the skills necessary to succeed in an on-line class, please complete the checklist in the link below to help you determine if you are sufficiently prepared to succeed in this course.

See the San Juan College WebCT login page and self-test under “Getting Started”: http://www.sanjuancollege.edu/documents/DistanceLearning/stu_or.htm

What do I need to do if I decide to take this course?

Space in this class is limited—if you enroll and then don’t participate or drop the course within the first week, be aware that you are depriving another student (who may not have other options for completing the course) of this opportunity. If you are well-prepared and committed to success in the course, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for the course!
  2. Purchase the required textbook (See above).
  3. Prior to class, email the instructor (woodj@sanjuancollege.edu) with the following information

·         Your name, complete mailing address, telephone numbers (work, home, cellular, etc.) and hours to call

·         Your major/program of study, career goals, approximate number of college credit hours completed, and any other physics classes taken (on-line or otherwise)

·         A brief explanation of why you are taking PHYS111 on-line
