Course Description

This course will be taught fully on-line and requires dedication to the course readings and online discussions. It will be important to be in the course daily for the first few weeks then several times a week thereafter. Plan on spending about 18 hours a week on the course. Online courses are not easy so don’t expect this to be just because we don’t meet in person. There will be weekly readings, exams, projects and various other responsibilities in the course with specific deadlines in place. If you are unsure about participating in an online course, speak to the instructor before the course begins or see a staff member in the Teaching and Learning Center to assess your skills online.

Online Information and time commitment:

Consider carefully whether or not you are suited for online learning—not everyone is. Although we are working to remedy this, about ˝ of the students who register for an online course end up dropping, withdrawing, or not finishing. This is partially because students don’t consider what online learning is going to be like.

There is a misconception that because a course is taken online the workload will be lighter or the course will be easier.  Nothing can be farther from the truth.  An online course takes more work than the traditional college course.  General rule of thumb is that students should study one to two hours outside class for each hour in class.  Since this is an online class, you need to factor in the three hours of classroom time that you are missing.  In turn, you should plan on spending a minimum of 18 hours each week on this course.

If you don't learn well on your own, you should reconsider whether you are suited for this course right now. To help you determine whether an online course is the right choice for you, look over the “Online Readiness Checklist” under “Getting Started with Online Learning” (http://www.sanjuancollege.edu/pages/1302.asp).
