What is this course?

The course is Math 095, Pre-Algebra.  This course instructs the student on the basic operations of arithmetic applied to whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals.  Topics include measurement conversions, scientific notation, percents, ratios, and proportions, basic geometry, formulas and the introduction of variable expressions and linear equations.

 

What are the prerequisites?

You must have passed Math 050(with a C or better), or an equivalent course taken at another institution and listed on your San Juan College (SJC) transcript(with a C or better). Or an Accuplacer score of 26-65 in Arithmetic and 0-40 in Algebra.

 

When does this course begin and end?

The course begins January 11th and ends May 5th.

Will I have to meet face-to-face with the instructor or other students?

There will be no face to face orientation.  Course handouts can be found at www.sanjuancollege.edu/cbaade after Dec 11th.

 

Will the course be hard for me?

Whether online or in the classroom, any math class can be a difficult course, especially if the student has not taken the prerequisite for the course.  You are possibly not saving yourself time by not taking the required prerequisite.  This course will challenge you and require time on your part to complete.  Online courses are more difficult than face to face courses and require a higher level of dedication.

How much time will I have to spend per week on this course?

You will need to spend as much time on this online course as you would in an in-class version.   An in-class version of Math 095 meets approximately 4 hours per week. As a rule, for every hour you are in class, you need to spend a minimum of 2 hours studying. So, 4 + (4 x 2) = 12 hours per week. Don't sign up for the course unless you are able to commit a great deal of time to it.
 

Can I go at my own pace?

Yes, you can move at your own pace.  When you are done with the online unit exams you can take the final exam and be done with the course at that point.  There are deadlines for all of the unit exams.  If deadlines are not met for the exams, the student will not be allowed to make them up!

What do I need to do if I decide to take this course?

The course space is limited—if you enroll and then don’t participate, or drop the course early on, be aware that you are depriving another student (who may not have other options for completing the course) of this opportunity. If you are serious about taking Math 095 online, follow these steps:
