How do I find a book in the SJC Library?

Users can search the online library catalog from our website or from computers in the library.  Our Reference Librarians will be glad to give you initial instruction in how to search the catalog.

How do I find a magazine article?

There are a number of print indexes to magazine and journal articles on the Index Tables in the library.

          Applied Science and Technology Index (1988 - present)
           Biological and Agricultural Index (Aug. 1991 - present)
           Business Periodicals Index (July 1967 - present)
           Education Index (July 1971 - present)
           General Science Index (April 1974 - present)
           Humanities Index (April 1974 - present)
           Readers' Guide to Periodicals Index (July 1967 - present)
           Social Sciences Index (June 1967 - present)

The library subscribes to a variety of online databases that provide citations to journal and magazine articles and often the full text of the article itself.  These can be from the library website by selecting Databases by Title or Databases by Subject

How big is the library's collection? [top of page]

The San Juan College Library has over 57,000 volumes and subscribes to over 450 different periodical titles (including 11 Daily, 7 Sunday, and 2 Weekly newspapers).

Who may borrow materials from the SJC Library?

San Juan College students, staff, and faculty
San Juan County residents who are over 18 and can show proof of residency

Do I need an SJC Library card to check out books?

A San Juan College I.D. card is required.

San Juan County residents who are not SJC students are able to apply for a San Juan College I.D. card, to be used to borrow library materials.

How to get a library card at SJC library

If you are an SJC student, you should already have an SJC student ID card. Bring your ID card and proof of your mailing address to create a library account. At the Circulation desk, you will complete a short form, in order to establish your account with the library. Be sure you bring your student ID with you when you come to the library. It is your library card. If for some reason you did not get a student ID, we can make one for you.

Community members or GED students can obtain a card by providing photo identification and proof af address.

How long may I borrow materials from the library?  [top of page]

Books:  three weeks
General Interest Videos: 3 days (limit 2)
Material put on reserve by instructors: varies depending on instructor
Reference books and periodicals cannot be checked out.
Reference videos are for "in library use only" and may be checked out and viewed in the library.

May I renew a book?

Patrons may renew their books one time, unless another patron has requested the item. Renewals may be done in person or over the phone. A San Juan College I.D. card is required to renew books.  Overdue books CANNOT be renewed by phone.

Where do I return materials checked out from the library?

Book drops are located near the Circulation Desk in the library and outside the Learning Commons Building.

What are the Overdue Fines? [top of page]

Overdue fines are charged when materials are not returned by the designated due date or time.  The fees are:

 $.25 per day per book (up to a maximum overdue fine of $5.00)
 $1.00 per hour for reserve materials
 $1.00 per day for interlibrary loan items
 $5.00 handling fee for lost or damaged materials, plus the cost of the material
 $1.00 per day per take-home video (up to a maximum of $20.00)

Patrons who have lost or severely damaged books or videos will be required to pay the full replacement cost, plus a $5.00 processing fee.

Patrons will not be allowed to check out materials until all fines have been paid at the Borrower Services desk.  Sanctions may apply to San Juan College students who have not paid for lost or severely damaged materials.

What if the material I need is not at the SJC Library?

Patrons who do not find a particular book or periodical in the SJC library may request it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Allow 10-14 days to receive materials.  Some fees may apply, depending on the type of material and the policy of the lending library.

Are there copy machines available in the library?

Yes - the library provides two black & white photocopiers and one color copier (all coin operated).

Is there a place where a small group can meet in the library?  [top of page]

The library has two study rooms that are available for reservation. Please go to the circulation desk if you wish to do so.

Is there a place where I can view videos in the library?

There are four TV/VCR viewing stations in the library.

Where can I get help with my library research?

The Reference Librarians are available at the Reference Desk in the library seven days a week.  They will be happy to help you find the resources you will need for your  research.
