Native American Research TutorialFirst Search: Basic Search
This lesson will explore the basic search screen in First Search. It will cover when and how to do a Basic Search. 1. Search by AreaThe first screen upon entering First Search in the Basic Search screen. One option is to select a subject area and search multiple databases at the same time. Let's search for information about economic development. We will pick Business and Economics as our subject area.
The results: Note how many hits you get for this general subject search. Basic searches can be good for seeing what kind of coverage there is of a topic. It can also help select an appropriate database. They are less useful for general searches where you need to get a useable retrieval set.
2. Search by DatabaseIf you know the database that you want to use, you can search a particular database rather than a topic area. For example, if you know you want books, you can select WorldCat. If you are looking for general interest publications, you can search ArticleFirst or Wilson SelectPlus. Let's search Wilson SelectPlus for information on economic development.
The results: Note again that you get many hits on simple keyword search.
You can click on "Refine Your Search Results" to get advice about how to get fewer and more focused results. We will cover some of these strategies next.
