Native American Research Tutorial

Searching the Internet: Using Subject Guides

Introduction

Using Subject Guides

Search Engines

Evaluating Results

Given the fact that there are so many Web pages on the Internet, one of the best ways to begin a search is by locating Native American subject guides on the Web. These provide a list of useful web sites by and about native peoples. They are often organized by topic, such as history or government.

Subject Guides are useful for two reasons:

  1. They filter vast amounts of information for you. Rather than searching the entire Web, you can go to useful sites immediately.
  2. They generally provide high quality sites with accurate information.
For a list of Native American Subject Guides, see the Native American Web Resources section of the Navajo Subject Guide.
