Navajo Studies Subject Guide: Economics and Business Resources

Books

Business information can be found in the HD-HJ section of the library. Materials on economics can be found in the HB-HC section. Related materials might also be found in the E99 section of the library. Both the circulating and reference collections material on business and economics.  The following are some useful general resources about business:

  • New Mexico business directory. (HF5065.N4 N4  SJC). Request at Reference Desk 
  • Navajo Nation Code (KF8228.N3 A5 1995). For information on tax and business regulations. The latest code is in the Southwest Room.  Previous codes are shelved in the Law Collection.

The following print indexes are good places to look for citations to articles about economics topics. 

  • Business Periodicals Index:  Covers business periodicals from August 1989 to the present. 
  • Social Sciences Index: Indexes periodicals from related fields, including economics. 

If you find a citation to a journal that is not in the San Juan College Library Collection, please see the Reference Librarian about InterLibrary Loan. Some useful journals in the San Juan College Library Collection:

Electronic Indexes and Full-text Databases

Each of the following electronic databases contain information about Navajo business and economics. The subject terms are different in each, however. Business Source Elite Provides indexing and access to fulltext of select articles in popular business magazines, scholarly journals and trade publications.  Some useful subject headings:

First Search

EconLit
Includes citations to scholarly articles, books, and papers on economics.  From 1969 to the present.  Provides the fulltext of some articles.  A good place to look for information on economic development.  There is no subject heading for Navajo or Dineh.  Try a keyword search.

Wilson Business
Provides indexing and abstracting of leading business magazines. Citations and abstracts date from 1986. Links to full-text articles date from 1990 to the present.  "Navajo" is a subject heading, but keyword searching might produce more results.

Proquest Business Module

Provides access to both citations and fulltext articles, dating back to 1971. Includes both scholarly and news publications. There is no specific subject heading for Navajo, but you can narrow a search to "Native Americans" in the subject field.  Some sample journals:
