Books on education can be found in the LA-LB section of the library. 
Curriculum development material, including lesson plans, can be found in the LB section of the circulating collection.  Please note that many educational materials can be found at San Juan College West. The location will be noted in the catalog record.

The following print indexes are good places to look for citations to articles about Navajo education.

  • Education Index: Covers education periodicals from 1989 to the present.  Earlier editions, back to 1971, are available upon request. 
  • Social Sciences Index: Indexes periodicals from related fields, including psychology.

Electronic Indexes and Full-text Databases

Each of the following electronic databases contain information about Navajo education. The subject terms are different in each, however.

First Search

Provides both citations and fulltext articles. The following databases can be searched simultaneously.

Education Abstracts:
Contains abstracts from 550 publications in the field of education.  Provides some fulltext articles.  Covers 1983 to the present. Abstracts from 1994. 

  • Anthropology & Education Quarterly
  • Journal of American Indian Education
  • Rural Educator

ERIC: 
Contains annotated references to educational materials issued in the monthly Resources in Education (RIE) and to journal articles issued in the monthly Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE).  Provides some full-text articles. Covers 1966 to the present.

Library Lit:
Includes records for selected library journals, books (more than 600 a year), conference proceedings, library school theses, pamphlets, and book reviews.  Provides some full-text articles. Covers 1980 to the present. 

Wilson Select and Wilson Select Plus
Provides full-text articles in education and other fields.  Covers 1994 to the present.

Some subject headings that might be useful in a search. Please note that each of the databases in First Search uses different subject headings:

ProQuest Education Module

Provides access to both citations and fulltext articles, dating back to 1994. There is no subject heading for Navajo, but you can do a keyword search to find related material. You can also search for "Navajo Tribe" in the Company Name field.

Note   To set up a ProQuest search in the Educaton Module, follow these steps:

  1. Click on "Collections" at the top of the ProQuest screen.
  2. Click on the "+" sign in the box next to "ProQuest General Reference"
  3. Click on the box next to "Education Module" to select.
