Navajo Code

The laws of the Navajo Nation can be found in the Navajo Code. The most recent Navajo Code can be found in the Southwest Room. Previous codes are shelved in the Law Collection (Shelf 3).

Navajo Reporter

Legal Periodical via First Search

An index to legal publications, including the American Indian Law Review. Includes citations to articles dating from 1981. It also includes access to the fulltext of select material.

A search for "Navajo" in the subject field will retrieve material related to cases with Navajo in the title.

National Indian Law Library

The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) is the home of the National Indian Law Library, a public law library devoted to federal Indian and tribal law.

The NILL provides some fulltext documents from its web site. You can also search the catalog online. They will send copies or InterLibrary Loan materials for nominal fees.  The collection includes the following:

  • Tribal self-governance documents, including tribal constitutions, codes, ordinances, charters, bylaws and intergovernmental agreements. 
  • Legal pleadings from important Indian law cases.
  • Indian law treatises, case law reporters, handbooks, and manuals.
  • Native American Rights Fund publications.
  • Federal legislative history documents relating to Indian law including statutes, congressional hearings and reports.
  • American Indian treaties. 
  • Federal administrative documents relating to Indian law.
  • Tribal and Indian law-related newsletters, newspapers and periodicals.
  • A basic collection of general reference and historical/cultural books on Native Americans.
