Web Resources

US Census Bureau
http://www.census.gov/

The official Web Site of the United States Census. This site provides links to a wide range of statistical reports. You can search the site in a variety of ways.

Some good places to look for statistics about the Navajo Nation:

American Indian and Alaska Native Populations
http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/race/indian.html

This is the best place to start for information focused on American Indians. Most of the tables only report data on the largest 25 tribes, which includes the Navajo Nation. The page includes links to a variety of reports, summaries, and data, such as:

  • Characteristics of American Indians by Tribe and Language
  • Top 25 American Indian Tribes for the United States: 1980 and 1990
  • Selected Social and Economic Characteristics for the 25 Largest American Indian Tribes
  • American Indian Languages Spoken at Home by American Indian Persons 5 Years and Over in Households: 1990
  • Selected Housing Characteristics of Occupied Housing Units With an American Indian Householder, by Tribe of Householder for the 25 Largest American Indian Tribes: 1990

American Fact Finder
http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/BasicFactsServlet

A searchable page with statistical information from the 1990 Census. Also includes some advanced data from the 2000 census. You can search by topic (such as race and income), keyword and place name. In general, this is a good place for summaries and comparisons, on the national, state, or county level.

It is harder to search for specific places on the Navajo Reservation because the data is not broken down by the names of Indian reservations or zip codes. You can search for street addresses, but since these are few and far between on the reservation, you will not get very complete results.

Gazetter
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer

You can search for 1990 data by zip code here. Again, you cannot search for the entire Navajo Nation at once. The data is not broken down by unincorporated areas. Once you get a zip code and click on "search," you will get a list of tables, with statistics on housing, income, race, educational attainment, and more.

You can look up zip codes at the US Postal Service Web Site
http://www.usps.com/ncsc/lookups/lookup_zip+4.html

Hint: For the address field, type in "general delivery" and then the name of the nearest town. This should get you the zip code for the local post office.

Statistical Abstracts
http://www.census.gov/statab/www/

Provides links to quick facts by state, state rankings, and frequently requested tables.

FedStats
http://www.fedstats.gov/

Provides links to a variety of statistical sources. You can serach by state, agency, or topic. See the index (http://www.fedstats.gov/cgi-bin/A2Z.cgi) for a list of topics. Please note that there is no topic for Native Americans or American Indians.

City and County Date Books
http://fisher.lib.Virginia.EDU/ccdb/

Provides access to local statistical information from the census. You can search by county or state, but, again, few reservation-communities are large enough to appear in the results on their own.
