San
Juan College Library Instructional Program Mission Statement
Instruction in using information
resources is an indispensable foundation of a learning college. We embrace
the national Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education
http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/informationliteracycompetency.htm
and the understanding that student learning cannot begin without the knowledge
of how to acquire, evaluate, and use the appropriate information. The
mission of the San Juan College Library instructional program is to help
students learn how to:
·
Determine what information is needed for a given situation
· Access information effectively and efficiently in a variety
of formats via
various technologies
· Use critical thinking skills to evaluate information and its
appropriateness for the task at hand
· Integrate new information into their current knowledge base
· Use information appropriately and with an understanding of
ethical and legal aspects, especially as it pertains to academic honesty
Meeting these objectives will
not only improve student success in an individual class, but contribute
to their knowledge base for future classes as well.
The goals of San Juan College
Library's instructional program dovetail with those of the college's Common
Student Learning Outcomes regarding learning, thinking, communicating,
integrating, and acting. In this information rich era, the library and
its instructional program are essential to San Juan College's overall
mission of improving the quality of life of the citizens it serves.

How
to Request Library Instruction
We look forward to the opportunity
of introducing students to the library and its resources.
MAKING A REQUEST
Please fill out and submit your library instruction request using our
Online
Request Form to give us a basic idea of your objectives for
the session and your timeframe. If you have difficulty accessing the online
form, a printable
copy is available.
SCHEDULING
Each semester we receive a large number of requests for instruction, so
it is vital that you plan and schedule with us as far in advance as possible
in order to "secure a spot" on our calendar. Allowing us adequate
time to plan for your class helps ensure that we will provide the best
instructional experience for your students. For this reason,
we cannot accept requests less than one week prior to the date of
the actual session.
LOCATION
Library:
Instruction may take place in the library itself. This type of instruction
usually involves an overview of the library and it services and/or instruction
in the use of specific resources located in the library. This gives the
students an idea of the resources available to them and, most importantly,
the specialists who are available in the library to assist them.
Campus Computer
Lab or Classroom: Instruction
focused on electronic resources (databases, internet, etc.) is most effective
when students can have hands-on experience during class. Reserving a campus
computer lab or a laptop cart (to be brought to your classroom) is the
responsibility of the instructor. Contact Casey Joslyn at 566-3231 or
via email joshlinc@sanjuancollege.edu
to make reservations (once the instruction date has been confirmed with
the Reference Librarians).
PLANNING
Our most successful instructional sessions are those in which the instructor
and the reference librarian have taken the time to sit down with each
other and plan a session tailored to fit the instructor's class objectives.
Once your session is scheduled, please contact the librarian who will
be working with you and your class to go over planning details.
ONLINE TUTORIAL
An Online
Tutorial to research in the San Juan College Library is available.
While the tutorial is not a substitute for actual face-to-face instruction,
it can be recommended to students as a way to enhance their skills prior
to a library visit or as a review following a library instructional session.
It can also be a valuable component to research taught in an online course.
