The School of Energy offers Associates of Applied Science degrees and Certificate programs in Natural Gas Compression, Industrial Process Operators, Lease Operators, Renewable Energy, Well Control, Safety, CDL(Commercial Drivers License) and Rig Operations.  Our goal is to provide individuals an opportunity to learn skills that will support them at both an entry level and advanced position in the oil and gas field, construction and general work force.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Programs
For a Class A commercial driver’s license. Students learn in the classroom to prepare for the permit tests at the MVD office. They practice hands-on driving on our training course and on the highway to prepare for the CDL driving test. They also receive instruction on such topics as Tanker, Doubles/Triples and Hazmat endorsements, hours of service, weight and balance, and vehicle out of service regulations. Certificate.

State of New Mexico CDL Examiners
School of Energy offers New Mexico CDL Examinations. (Vehicles are available for an additional cost.) CDL Examinations are required to be scheduled 7 to 10 days in advance.

Forklift Safety, Theory and Certification
(OSHA Required - December 1, 1999) A program compliant with all relevant OSHA regulations, ASME/ANSI standards, training and certification for powered industrial truck operators. Certificate (good for three years).

Aerial Boomlift/Scissorlift Training
(ANSI A92.6 - 1999 ScissorLift and ANSI A92.5 - 2006 Aerial Boom Lift) This program complies with all relevant ANSI standards.  Individuals receive training and verification as operators.  Each individual successfully completing the course will receive a Certificate and Pocket card from San Juan College School of Energy that is good for life (one time certification course).

Occupational Safety AAS Degree
San Juan College has joined with the Texas Engineering Extension Service and Texas A&M University-Commerce to offer safety professionals an exciting new opportunity to earn a college degree. This unique program allows qualified safety professionals who already hold a TEEX Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO) certificate to earn a college degree while holding down a full-time job.


Safety Awareness Program
Covers sixteen different safety topics to provide training for entry level employees in the oil and gas field, construction, or the general work force. Certificate / Annual Refresher.

First Aid and CPR—Confined Space
Classroom and hands-on training to satisfy OSHA requirements of an awareness program. Certificate / Annual Refresher.

Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response 8-Hour Refresher
For the first time employee handling or assisting with hazardous materials, or as a refresher course. Provides up-date information and training to comply with OSHA requirements and to maintain current status for individuals that have completed 24-hour and 40-hour programs. Certificate / Annual Refresher.

Industrial Process Operator Program
This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions as operators for power generation, natural gas, and refinery processes in the Four Couners area. Employment opportunities are expected to increase with large numbers of current operators retiring and additional process facilities being planned through the next two decades. The Hands-On approach along with process theory presented by instructors with industry experience will thoroughly prepare graduates for entry-level operator positions.

Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response 24-Hour
Hazardous waste operations for Technicians or Specialists who work with hazardous materials or respond to hazardous spills in the work location. Certificate.

Rig Operations Training Programs

Includes safety and hands on rig experience training for new employees/rig workers. We also provide developmental training programs for current derrick men and rig operators.

IADC Rig Pass and San Juan College Certificate.

Petroleum Technology Training Programs
Oil and gas field personnel are trained in the classroom and hands-on in all aspects of production operations. Included are the Lease Operator Program, artificial lift training and gas measurement. AAS degree and/or IADC Rig Pass and San Juan College Certificate.

IADC WellCAP Certified Well Control Training (BOP)

Training in Drilling, Workover/completion, underbalanced, coiled tubing, snubbing and wireline well control operations. Individual and combined classes available.

IADC WellCAP Certificate.

Natural Gas Compression Program
Covers the mechanical and technical aspects of compression technology specifically related to the natural gas industry. Students train in a classroom/shop setting, and work with a sponsoring company in the field. AAS degree and/or Certificate.
