“The expansion of the Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology represents far more than additional square footage,” said San Juan College President Dr. Toni Pendergrass. “It will also serve as a hub for collaboration, bringing together students, educators and community members in ways that inspire curiosity and lifelong learning.”

Donor Support Makes the Expansion Possible

The museum expansion would not be possible without the generosity of its donors. The San Juan College Foundation received vital early support from the Merrion family, which helped launch the project, followed by a transformative $4 million gift from the Dugan family. These contributions were essential in bringing the vision to life and reflect a shared commitment to geology education and hands-on learning opportunities.

Sean Dugan, son of Sherman Dugan, reflected on his father’s legacy:

“This started as something very personal for our family. My dad had a deep curiosity about the earth, and creating the museum in his name was a way to share that with others. What’s been most meaningful is seeing how much it’s resonated, especially with young people. Watching that spark of curiosity in kids has been incredible. It’s an honor for our family to support the expansion and help give more students across the Four Corners a chance to discover earth sciences and find something that sticks with them for life. I think my dad would be really proud of what it’s become.”

Modern Design for Learning and Community Engagement

The museum expansion, led by Dekker Design and Jaynes Corporation, will add more than 3,700 square feet of interior space, extending from the existing lobby and integrating seamlessly with the School of Energy. The new design creates a modern, cohesive learning environment that fosters exploration and collaboration.

In addition to interior improvements, the project will enhance outdoor areas with a large terrace and movable window walls, allowing indoor and exterior spaces to merge. These features provide flexible space for community gatherings, events and interactive learning activities, strengthening San Juan College’s role as a regional hub for geology education.

Inspiring Curiosity Through Hands-On Learning

Once complete, the expanded Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology will offer a variety of interactive exhibits, including fossil and mineral displays, energy industry equipment and immersive learning opportunities.

The museum will continue to welcome school groups, students and visitors from across the Four Corners region, providing hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and deepen understanding of geology and energy sciences.

“The museum expansion will transform how we experience geology,” said John Burris, a San Juan College geology professor. “Having more space for interactive exhibits and real-world equipment allows students and the community to engage with science in meaningful ways.”

A Lasting Investment in Education and Community

The Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology expansion represents a long-term investment in education, community engagement and workforce development. By creating an environment where students can explore, experiment and learn.
