What begins with curiosity can sometimes change lives.

For SJC dual credit student June Loukinas, a personal loss inspired a research journey that led to one of the world's most prestigious science competitions.

Loukinas earned second place in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world's largest international science competition for high school students. Her innovative research explored whether simulated microgravity could improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy, earning recognition among more than 1,700 of the brightest young scientists and engineers from around the globe.

Her achievement highlights the power of student research, mentorship and hands-on learning while showcasing how SJC helps students pursue careers in STEM, biomedical sciences and engineering.

Turning Personal Loss into Scientific Discovery

Loukinas' research began with a deeply personal motivation. After losing her uncle to stage four cancer, she wanted to better understand the disease and explore ways to improve cancer treatment.

Rather than accepting unanswered questions, she committed herself to scientific research. Her project investigated whether exposing cancer cells to simulated microgravity could enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatments, an emerging area of biomedical research with potential applications in both cancer care and space medicine.

The project demanded years of dedication. Along the way, Loukinas taught herself coding, engineering design and advanced mathematics while overcoming the challenges of conducting sophisticated laboratory research. Access to specialized equipment was limited, but with support from mentors and research partners, she transformed an ambitious idea into award-winning research.

"It was a huge dream," Loukinas said. "I was bawling my eyes out when I won."

Looking back on the experience, Loukinas said the competition offered far more than recognition.

"It was definitely humbling," she said. "You're talking to people from everywhere, and you see all these projects that are just incredible. It reminds you of the difference you can make in the world through scientific study."

Transferring to a Four-Year College in the Fall

While conducting internationally recognized research, Loukinas also achieved another impressive milestone. Through SJC’s Dual Credit Program, she graduated with both her high school diploma and an Associate of General Education degree.

Her experience demonstrates how dual credit programs can accelerate academic success while providing students with access to college-level coursework, faculty mentorship and research opportunities that prepare them for competitive STEM careers.

This fall, Loukinas will continue her education at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she will enroll in an accelerated five-year bachelor's and master's program focused on biology, aerospace engineering and bioastronautics. This five-year program will be condensed to three years as several of Loukinas’ credits will transfer. 

She will pursue her studies with support from the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship, a highly competitive full-ride scholarship recognizing students who demonstrate leadership, integrity, academic achievement and a commitment to serving their communities.

Science and Service Go Hand in Hand

Outside the laboratory, Loukinas dedicates her time to community service as an ambassador for Dress a Girl Around the World, an international nonprofit that provides handmade dresses to children in need.

"I enjoy science, but I also enjoy doing something girly and fun every now and then," she said. "That's another outlet for me."

Her commitment to both scientific discovery and community service reflects the well-rounded leadership qualities that continue to shape her future.

Advice for Future Student Researchers

For students considering research or STEM careers, Loukinas encourages them to follow their interests and trust their passion.

"When you're passionate, you will find those resources and those outlets, or they'll come to you," she said.

Her journey demonstrates that curiosity, determination and the right support system can open doors to opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom.
