SJC Fit Club

The SJC FIT CLUB is designed to change behaviors that elicit healthier lifestyles. This program is aimed to change your life and maximize your wellness potential. Register for next session August 31 - November 16, 2011!

Sign up for San Juan College’s Fit Club class and learn how to incorporate proper nutrition and exercise to acquire and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The next session will meet August 31st – November 16rd, on Wednesdays, at 5:30 p.m., at the Health and Human Performance Center (HHPC). Fit Club enrollees can choose to participate as an individual or as a team.

We’ve added some new aspects to the Fit Club,” explains Jason Curtis, SJC coordinator of fitness and intramural sports. “People can now sign up for Fit Club as a class and earn one-credit hour, or they can choose to audit it, similar to how the class was previously designed.

Curtis says the Fit Club class will run for 12 weeks as it did in the past. The first six weeks will include a 30-minute information session, followed by a one-hour workout. The next two weeks will consist of a one-hour workout session each Wednesday. However, during the final four weeks, participants are encouraged to work out on their own and set their individual exercise schedule. Instructors and trainers will remain available as needed to help guide students in their weight loss and fitness goals.

We want to encourage individuals to develop a personal eating plan and workout schedule that will work best for them,” Curtis says. “Our goal is to provide the tools, skills and techniques so students will have the confidence to take charge of their health and weight loss goals, and then maintain that once the class is over.

Upon completion of the class, various prizes will be awarded to individuals. Teams will receive awards in four categories – the largest percentage of body fat lost; the best overall body age, the biggest decrease in overall body age, and the best Wednesday night attendance.

Those interested in enrolling in the Fit Club, should make arrangements with HHPC trainer Matt Bauman to set up a fitness assessment prior to the August 31 start date. The cost to enroll is $47 for those who are currently enrolled at the HHPC, or $92, which includes the HHPC fee and the Fit Club class fee. While the actual Fit Club class is scheduled for 12 weeks, the cost provides students with the benefit of a 16-week access to the Health and Human Performance Center.

Participants can enroll at the HHPC or at the San Juan College Admissions Office, located in the Educational Services Building. For further information or to arrange the pre-class fitness assessment, call the Health and Human Performance Center at 566-3410.

The SJC FIT CLUB is a contest between teams and individuals designed to create a fitness behavior change. The FIT CLUB contest will begin with a full assessment to determine beginning Body age, body composition, and overall fitness level. The contestants have 12 weeks to workout, eat healthy, and change their lifestyle to promote healthier living. During the twelve weeks each week they have the chance to work with our personal trainers every Wednesday at 5:30 PM for an hour to get information, tips, and direction in reaching their fitness and wellness goals. Starting that first Wednesday and every Wednesday for the first six weeks there will be an educational portion that lasts 30 minutes and will teach safe, healthy ways to reach their fitness and wellness goals, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle for the rest of their lives. Although this is a twelve week competition, the main goal of this program is to get people started on the path to a healthier life for the rest of their life.

Before the end of the twelve weeks the participants have a week to do a follow up assessment and the following Wednesday at 5:30 PM will be an awards ceremony. There will be a prize for the team that loses the most body fat percentage. There will be prizes for the team that has the best overall “Body Age”. There will also be a prize for the team that decreases their over all “body Age” the most. There will also be a prize for the team that has the best attendance at the Wednesday meeting times during the twelve weeks.

New this Fit Club we are offering it as a class that participants can either audit, or take for a PHED credit and receive a grade and college credit.
