San Juan College Honors Program

SJC Honors Program

The SJC Honors Program has grown dramatically over the last few years, due in large part, to our philosophy and the commitment of the SJC faculty members, students, and staff. The SJC Honors Program is unique and enables individuals to experience success in their academic life at San Juan College. SJC Honors courses are offered each semester and available to all students.

SJC Honors Program Mission:

  • To promote critical thinking and higher-level learning among students who are seeking those challenges
  • To provide learning opportunities in cross-disciplinary and innovative, creative environments beyond the traditional curriculum
  • To better prepare students for their careers, scholarship opportunities, and transfer to four-year institutions

Honors Courses

San Juan College offers Honors Courses in two basic formats:

  • Embedded Honors Courses: core courses regularly offered with both honors and non-honors students enrolled. Honors students conduct more in-depth investigations of topics and are held to higher academic standards than non-honors students.
  • Special Honors Topics Courses: offered periodically. These classes provide opportunities to study a variety of topics, often in an interdisciplinary and/or seminar environment.

The vast majority of honors offerings are embedded honors courses, which are regularly scheduled classes with both honors and non-honors students enrolled simultaneously. Such courses provide an enriched learning environment for all enrolled students, in addition to offering several advantages to both the instructor and San Juan College. Embedded Honors Courses offer students a more enriched and rigorous educational experience and may be distinguished from traditional courses by either the quality and depth of work required or the standards of academic performance expected of students or both.

Honors courses are offered each semester and are available to all students. Honors sections of core courses may be substituted for regular sections. Honors special topics courses will fulfill elective credits toward graduation. Students have the option of adding an honors section by the end of the second week of instruction by using a Drop/Add form.

Honors Service Learning

The established Service Learning Program at San Juan College is outstanding. By participating in service learning, students can assist their community in a high-impact practice that connects meaningful community service with academic learning, get applied experience utilizing what they learned, and build their resume, all of which makes them more desirable to future employers and higher education institutions.

Students interested in participating in the Honors Service Learning Program will need to enroll in courses characterized by HSLC. Honors Service Learning courses are taught in a wide and extensive variety of subjects and encompass the honors module. Students can graduate with Honors Service Learning Designation when they complete four honors service learning courses and can acquire scholarships from this honor.

Research also shows that students who do service learning often are more involved in and excited about class work.
