Bibliographies
Several
Navajo subject bibliographies have appeared in the last several
decades. The following titles can be found in the Southwest
Reference Collection. They are a good place to begin research
on a topic.
-
Howard, N. Jill.
Navajos, Apaches and Pueblos since 1940 : a selective bibliography
(SW Reference, E78.S7 H69 1995)

Searching
the SJC Catalog
The San Juan College
Library is organized according to the Library of Congress Classification
system. Most books about Navajo will be found in the E99.N3
section of the library. Material can be found in the circulating
and reference collections, as well as the Southwest Room.
Please note that some related material might be classified in other
parts of the library (such as history, economics, or geography),
especially if the book is about more than the Navajo (such as multiple
Indian tribes).
Subject headings are
assigned to each book according the standardized Library of Congress
Subject Headings. These subheadings can be general (such as Navajo
Indians) or subdivided by more specific aspects of a topic (such
as Navajo Indians -- Economic conditions). Please note that
many Navajo people refer to themselves as Dine or Dineh. This term
is not used by the Library of Congress, but might appear in book
titles. For a comprehensive search, you might need to search for
a LCSH subject heading and the term "Diné" or "Dineh"
in the title or keyword field.
Using subject headings
is a good way to narrow down a search because it searches only words
in the subject field. A keyword search searches the entire catalog
record, including title, author, and notes.

WorldCat
You can also search WorldCat
using First Search. This is a catalog of millions of books, magazines,
manuscripts, maps, and other materials from libraries all over the
world. It uses the same Library of Congress Subject Headings
as San Juan College.
With the large number
of books in the catalog, it is recommended that you use subject
headings with specific subdivisions or a combination of subject
headings and keywords in order to get a reasonable set of results.
For example, a recent search of only the books in WorldCat that
include "Navajo" in the subject heading produced nearly 7,000 titles.
