Southwest Winds Quintet

The Southwest Winds Quintet, a component of the United States Air Force Band of the West, will kick off the San Juan College 2009-10 Silhouette Performing Arts Series with a free concert. The quintet specializes in entertainment for small audiences. Fashioned after a typical 18th-century orchestral wind section and comprised of five world-class wind instrumentalists, Southwest Winds promotes the concept of using classical chamber ensembles in musical support of the Air Force mission. The ensemble utilizes a variety of instrument combinations and presents a vast repertoire, encompassing Renaissance to contemporary music.

SJC Fall Drama Wit
Little Theatre
Tickets: $10 adults, $8 students and seniors
The San Juan College Theatre Department presents this Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Margaret Edson that features the character Dr. Vivian Bearing, a feared and revered lecturer and professor of 17th century poetry. The play documents her struggle with stage IV metastatic ovarian cancer. As she prepares to die alone, she gradually realizes that she would much prefer kindness and compassion to intellect, hence the title of the work, Wit.

For over 20 years, the amazing performances of the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats have been the perfect high-energy attraction for hundreds of universities, performing arts centers and corporate events. It's no wonder! Under the direction of acrobatic legends the Hai Family, the company flawlessly interprets the precision and grace of an art form honed by years of training and discipline. Their multi-faceted and multi-cultural production features dazzling acrobatic displays, formidable feats of daring and balance, explosive Kung Fu, brilliant costumes, and even a touch of Chinese comedy.

Masterworks Concert

The Fall Masterworks Concert will feature music from popular video games and music that has been used commercially for movies and TV shows. Music will be powerful and exciting, a mixture of simple and difficult, and a total collaboration of instrumental and choral. Composers are the contemporary masters, including "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana; "Adagio for Strings"; "Myst Medley" from Exile; "Bounty Hunter" from Advent Rising Suite; "One Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy VII; "Baba Yetu" from Civilization IV; God of War Montage, and more.

Juan Carmona

The prince of flamenco guitar, Carmona received a 2003 Latin Grammy nomination for Best Flamenco Album. Juan was barely 10 when his father gave him his first guitar. His virtuosity became quickly apparent to professional musicians, and it was only a matter of time before he began gathering international acclaim. He has proven to be one of the most creative guitarists of the new flamenco generation and as a performer has a surprising, moving quality.

Pine Leaf Boys

Louisiana's finest, two-time Grammy-nominated Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Cajun music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from the southwest Louisiana, the Pine Leaf Boys, known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements, have breathed new life into Cajun music, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand. The Pine Leaf Boys play the old fashioned dance hall standards while bringing many of the more obscure songs of past masters into their repertoire and playing them with gusto.

The Alley Cats

Formed at Fullerton College in 1987, the Alley Cats have made it to the forefront of a cappella music with their renditions of timeless doo-wop classics and zany improvisational comedy. Through the years, the Cats have performed with Jay Leno, Rascal Flatts and The Beach Boys. Whether they are entertaining the president at the White House, or "edutaining" students in their nationally recognized Arts Education program, The Alley Cats bring the same level of energy to every show.

SJC Spring Musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Performance Hall

Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, this musical is thrilling, operatic and full of drama. It tells the stylish tale of love, murder and obsession. Set in the harsh underworld of Victorian London, the show is both poignant and darkly comic, while featuring some remarkably close shaves and surprisingly delicious pies!

Enter the Haggis

Over the past five years, Toronto's Celtic rock band Enter The Haggis has found itself at the center of a grassroots success story teetering on the brink of mainstream success. From playing Celtic festivals to headlining them, and from the festival circuit to selling out multiple nights in rock venues, the band has blazed a path touring up and down the East Coast, to Canada, the West Coast and back again, winning over success one fan, one town, one region at a time. The band has made waves in the genre, landing high Billboard and iTunes World Music chart positions as well as major television appearances.
