The Possible Dream Program
The Possible Dream Scholarship Program at San Juan College is a prepayment plan that provides parents of eighth graders with an opportunity to prepay their student's tuition prior to the student's enrollment at San Juan College.
For the past 20 years, the Possible Dream Program has made the difference in the ability to attend college for more than 3,500 county students. It can make a difference for you, too.
The San Juan College Possible Dream Scholarship Program was modeled after a plan developed by New York philanthropist, Eugene Lang, to encourage Harlem sixth graders to finish high school and attend college. He had a dream! The program worked so well in New York that San Juan College decided to offer a similar program to the residents of San Juan County.
Benefits of the Program
- Special activities throughout the student's high school career
- "Information nights" for parents
- Special orientation and priority early registration for the first semester only
- A one semester General Scholarship worth $360
How the Program Works
The Possible Dream Program offers parents a simple method of prepaying their student's tuition at San Juan College prior to their graduation from high school. Fifty-four regular monthly payments of $20, beginning at the end of the student's eighth grade year, will cover three semesters of full-time tuition - San Juan College awards a general scholarship for the fourth semester. In order to further assist students enrolled in the program, the San Juan College Board has agreed to freeze the tuition rate in place when participants joined the program. Please note: Summer sessions are covered by this program.
Parents contribute to the program until the student graduates from high school, at which time the student has three full semesters - $1,080 - already paid for by the family, and one general scholarship paid for by San Juan College. The money contributed by the parents is refundable if the student decides to attend another college upon high school graduation, minus a $25 handling fee.
Participants have six semesters to use all of their Possible Dream funds including the general scholarship semester. Once they have become a student at San Juan College, participants may use their funds for either full- or part-time enrollment. When the participant is ready to take advantage of his or her general scholarship semester, he/she must be in good academic standing with a grade point average of 2.0 or above.
Activities and Events
Possible Dream participants will be invited to a variety of activities throughout their high school careers, including how to prepare for college information nights, financial aid information nights, special open houses/campus tours, visits to an English or math class, and complimentary tickets to certain fine arts events on campus.
In December of each year, San Juan County eighth graders and their parents will receive a letter from Dr. Carol Spencer, College president, explaining the plan, along with a scholarship certificate and an invitation to enroll in the Possible Dream Program, regardless of the student's current academic performance. Parents have until January 31 during their student's eighth grade year to enroll them in the program.
