The subjects of Mayhew’s paintings are dependent on how she is living her life at the time she is painting them. She may be traveling in a distant country or meditating outside on the farmland where she lives. She may be looking through old family photo albums or working with items from her eclectic collection of still life objects. Mayhew says her paintings have no political or symbolic meaning, rather they celebrate many of the ordinary and overlooked places and moments that pass through our lives.
The exhibit will include paintings from the past two years, during which Mayhew has focused on a series of same-size canvases that explore a small area of the farm on which she lives. These works reveal occasional and subtle changes in light and the more dramatic changes of season and weather, offering up a symphony of color and mood.
Mayhew has traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and North America and is finding it exciting to return home to focus on the natural surroundings of her home in southeastern Wisconsin.
