Opening Reception: Sunday, March 16, from 2 to 4 p.m.
“Presents of Mind,” an exhibit by ceramic artist Sheryl Johnson, will be on display in the San Juan College Library Gallery March 13 through April 6.
Johnson’s exhibit will include ceramic sculptures of a wide variety of objects. Whether the subject is an eager plump pug dog or a startled-looking woman with cats crawling all over her hat, Johnson credits attention to detail and original thinking as the basic ingredients of all her work.
Johnson says she is “completely driven to create art.” Her drawing, painting, photography and other adventures in art have all found their way into her current work. She has taken many classes offering advanced lessons in multiple disciplines, but says “it all comes down to practice.” Johnson served an apprenticeship with master potter George Philips at his studio in Palm Springs, California, where her natural sculpting ability was honed by the many hours she spent bent over a potter’s wheel.
Johnson’s work can be found in the One-of-a-Kind Gallery in Farmington. Her work has been featured on the cover of Off Hours.
