Phillip West
Art of the Southwest
August 10 through August 26, 2003
Opening Reception: Sunday, August 10, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Phillip West is a physician turned artist. During his 25 years as a medical doctor he found himself constantly drawing and sketching, but never gave serious thought to pursuing a second career as an artist until, “out of the blue,” he signed up for a Fechin Institute landscape painting workshop in Taos. He was hooked, and in 1999, 13 annual workshops later, West retired from private practice.
He says, “I love the Southwest and do most of my painting in and around the Four Corners Region. I paint with oils and prefer to finish my paintings on location when possible . . . Impressionist painting is, in general, the most pleasing to me and also the mode that seems to provide the best fit and degree of flexibility for me and the way in which I express myself as an artist.”
West’s paintings have been accepted into numerous juried art shows and have received honors and awards.
