Robert Preece has studied photography since 1983 when he took his first course at Santa Monica City College. His studies have included an Ansel Adams Photography Workshop and the Malibu Creek State Park Photography Workshop. For 10 years Preece worked for fine art publisher Mirage Editions, Inc., where he met and worked with photographers Bob Talbot, Jim Brandenburg, Dan Gurlach, Daniel Cox, and David Muench.
To Preece, art is the conveyance of feeling or emotion. The challenge of the photographer is to capture a subject on film in a fraction of a second. Preece says, “Sailing is the quietness of the bow breaking through the sea, the wind in the sails, the calm of the ocean at sunset, or the orderly confusion of the start of a race. To see these feelings transferred to the face of someone who wants to sail or someone who remembers when, is the reward.”
