Physical Therapist Assistant Program

PTA PROGRAMS

San Juan College has two PTA Programs, an On-Campus Program and an On-Line Program. Click on Prerequisite Courses to view the courses that must be completed prior to beginning the PTA Program in January of each year. Click on On-Campus Curriculum or On-Line Curriculum to view the sequence of the PTA courses for each program. The On-Line Program requires students to be at San Juan College approximately one week per PTA lab course toward the end of the semester.

PTA Profession

A Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is a health care professional involved in direct patient care under the supervision of a Physical Therapist. A PTA applies therapeutic modalities to alleviate pain including hot and cold packs, paraffin baths, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and traction. A PTA restores function through therapeutic massage, athletic taping, and gait training. A PTA educates patients about appropriate therapeutic exercises to optimize their functional outcome.

Associate of Applied Science Degree

San Juan College offers an On-Campus and an On-Line PTA program leading to an associate of applied science (AAS) degree.

Accreditation

Both PTA programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

The PTA lab overlooks Pinon Hills Golf Course, ranked the # 1 municipal course by Golf Digest in 2002. The lab is equipped with plinths, massage tables, electric high-low tables, traction tables, and mat tables. The PTA Program has state-of-the-art equipment, including hot pack, cold pack, paraffin bath, tilt table, hoyer lift, ultrasound, electrotherapy, and Microlight Laser machines.
