At San Juan College, our faculty and staff care about you. You’ll be in small classes with faculty that know your name and who are interested in your success. SJC offers a lot of variety to meet your individual needs—whether you plan to transfer after two years, complete a degree that will immediately prepare you to join the work force, or just take a couple of classes to brush up on your computer skills—San Juan can help. We are interested in your goals and are here for you!
San Juan College has an open door policy for admission. You are encouraged to apply for admission at least one month in advance of the semester for which you plan to enroll. Regular degree admission requires graduation from an accredited high school or satisfactory completion of the GED certificate program. Students can also be admitted as provisional or non-degree students under specific conditions.
To Apply
Applying for admission to San Juan College is easy—you can even apply on-line or use a printable form. Simply follow the steps below.
Regular Degree-Seeking Requirements (Effective Spring 2006)
Regular admission is intended for the student seeking a degree or certificate at San Juan College. To be considered as a regular degree-seeking student, first-time students must meet one of the following criteria.
Ø Graduate from a high school or home school program and satisfy one of the following test scores requirement listed in this section:
o Passing scores in at least four content areas on the state graduation exam, commonly referred to as competencies or proficiencies.
o Completion of the Accuplacer (college placement test) with the following “ability to benefit” scores (as defined by the Department of Education):
§ 55 – Reading Comprehension
§ 60 – Sentence Skills
§ 34 – Arithmetic
OR
Ø earn a GED
The official transcript or GED report must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions & Records. Transfer students must have all official transcripts from regionally accredited colleges and universities sent to the Office of Admissions & Records for consideration. If the transfer student graduated from high school or earned a GED, has 15 credits or more, and a 2.0 or better grade-point average, the high school transcript or GED transcript is not required.
An application for admission must be submitted in order for the college transcript(s) to be evaluated for transfer. The evaluation of transfer credits will occur after all required transcripts are on file. When a transcript is evaluated, the allowable credits and class standing are determined. The student is sent a copy of the evaluation. San Juan College will accept facsimile transcripts for advisement only.
The steps for admission are outlined below:
- Formal application for admission.
- Seven or eight semester transcript certifying graduation from an accredited high school, including all proficiency requirements OR equivalent GED scores.
- If transferring from a college, all college transcripts from regionally accredited colleges. Please note: Credits will not be accepted by transfer through a third institution or by transcripts sent to a specific San Juan College Department/School.
- Completion of the Accuplacer Exam.
- The test is given in the Counseling Department, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. You don’t need to take this test if you are not working toward a degree or have already completed college English and Algebra
- Attend a New Student Orientation
- You will be able to register for classes after attending the orientation session.

Courses taken as a provisional admit may be transferred to another college, taken for job improvement, or personal enrichment. No college or high school transcripts are required to be admitted as a non-degree student. Please note: Admission as a regular degree-seeking student is required to be considered for financial aid or to earn any type of degree.
If a student wishes to change from non-degree to degree-seeking status, the student must meet the requirements for regular admission (above) and complete a Change of Status form which is available at the Admissions & Records Office. If a student graduated from high school, but did not achieve the state-mandated passing scores on the state graduation exam (pass all proficiency requirements), the student will need to complete 12 non-remedial credits at San Juan College with a minimum GPA of 2.0 to qualify for a change of status to regular degree-seeking. In addition, the student must submit official transcripts from high school and/or college.

Residency Classification
Students are classified as in-state or out-of-state based on the information provided on the initial admission application. To be considered a resident, you must reside in the state for 12 consecutive months previous to your enrollment. If questions are raised while completing the admission application, additional documentation is required and includes such things as NM drivers license, car registration, voter registration, payment of NM income tax, bank account, etc.
If you are initially classified as out-of-state, you are not automatically changed to a resident once the 12 month time period has elapsed. You must initiate the request and complete the appropriate form and provide documentation to support the claim (listed above). Requests for change in residency classification must be completed and all requirements met before the first day of classes for that term.
There are some exceptions to the 12-month residency requirement. Those include:
- Be the spouse or dependent of someone who is employed in a full-time permanent position in New Mexico and provide the other documents outlined above.
- Reside in a Colorado county that borders on San Juan County and complete the reciprocal tuition form.
- Reside on the Navajo Nation and have the appropriate form completed and signed by an authorized agent of the Navajo Nation.
All forms for residency must be completed and submitted prior to the first day of classes for the term in which the student is applying.
Residency determination procedures apply only to US citizens or students on an immigration type visa. Only a US citizen or permanent visa student can establish New Mexico residency. Non-citizen students will be charged non-resident tuition for all semesters including summer session.
Tuition Facts

Transfer of Credits
To complete your admission you must have official transcript(s) sent to the Admissions Office from all colleges attended. Once all the transcripts are received, a transfer evaluation will be done. The credits are evaluated for transfer on the basis of the major selected. This information is entered in the computer so that advisors have access to the information. A copy of the evaluation is also sent to you.
General education courses from accredited colleges generally transfer to San Juan College, as long as a grade of “C” or higher is earned and the course is comparable in content and credit hours to one offered at SJC. Vo-tech courses do not automatically transfer, but may be considered for transfer credit by contacting the appropriate department at SJC and requesting a credit review of the vo-tech credit. Please note: any vo-tech credit that is awarded is for a specific program of study and would not automatically satisfy other degree requirements.
The State of New Mexico has implemented a "General Education Core Component" of 35 credit hours of coursework that is transferable and must be accepted by all public colleges within the state. These courses are listed in the SJC catalog as the general requirements for the Associate of Arts degree. The Associate of Science degree is also transferable. The course requirements for these programs are in the SJC catalog.
If you plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, you should plan according to these programs.
Transfer Credit Appeal Process
An applicant who wishes to appeal the transfer evaluation should follow the steps outlined below.
- File a written appeal with the Admissions & Records Office, providing information regarding the course(s) being appealed. A course description or other documentation about the content of the course being appealed should be attached.
- Within 30 days of the written appeal, the file will be reviewed and the student will be contacted in writing about the decision.
- If the student request is denied, and the student wishes to continue the appeal, the student must indicate this in writing to the Vice President of Student Services. The second appeal must be done within 30 days from the date of the first appeal decision letter.
- Within 30 days or less (when possible), The Vice President for Student Services will convene the Transfer Appeal Board (TAB). The TAB will review all applicable materials and governing statutes and make a decision. If the student wishes, a personal interview with the Transfer Appeal Board can be arranged, although it is not necessary. The decision of the Board becomes final upon majority vote.
- The Transfer Appeal Board consists of:
Vice President for Student Services
Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Services
Academic Dean

Credit based on CLEP and AP appears on the transcripts as credit-no grade is recorded for this type of credit. A total of 30 semester credits can be earned through examination.
