Dental Hygiene Program

San Juan College offers a Dental Hygiene Program leading to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. This program provides the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the profession of dental hygiene. Dental Hygiene is among today’s top 10 jobs with the strongest employment outlook and highest wages. Training includes more than 600 hours of clinical experience working with patients in the programs state of the art dental clinic. Students who complete the program will be well prepared to enter this exciting profession with job placement currently over 98%.

Dental Hygiene Profession

A dental hygienist is a licensed preventive oral health professional who provides educational, clinical and therapeutic services. The dental hygienist works in collaboration with the dental health care team in a variety of settings to help prevent oral disease. Work Environment: Dental Hygienists typically work in clean well-lighted offices. Important safeguards include strict adherence to proper radiological procedures and personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, surgical masks and gloves to protect themselves and their patients form infectious diseases. The San Juan College Dental Hygiene Program employs a state of the art 9-operatory clinic in the Health and Human Performance Center at San Juan College. Each operatory is equipped with ADEC dental chairs, DENTSPLY Cavitron units, Computer access, and Schick intra-oral digital radiology capability. The Program offers experiences in a number of exciting new technologies such as Computer Controlled Anesthetic Delivery as well.

The San Juan College Dental Hygiene Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and has been granted the accreditation status of Accredited without reporting requirements.

The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education and serves the public by establishing, maintaining and applying standards that ensure the quality and continuous improvement of dental and dental-related education and reflect the evolving practice of dentistry. The scope of the Commission on Dental Accreditation encompasses dental, advanced dental and allied dental education programs.

Students, faculty and members of the public are invited to discuss the program with the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Commission on Dental Accreditation will review complaints that relate to a program’s compliance with the accreditation standards. The Commission is interested in the sustained quality and continued improvement of dental and dental-related education programs but does not intervene on behalf of individuals or act as a court of appeal for individuals in matters of admission, appointment, promotion or dismissal of faculty, staff or students.
