School of Health Sciences

Welcome Message from the Dean

Oliver BordenOliver L. Borden, MS, MT (ASCP)

The School of Health Sciences currently includes seven programs, allowing students to earn degrees in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Health Information Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant, Surgical Technology, Emergency Medical Services First Responder through Paramedic, and Medical or Clinical Laboratory Technology. Since the latter is my profession, let me say that many of the technologies of this profession are those used by scientists in the very popular crime scene investigation shows. Our last new program is Respiratory Technology slated to begin development in the 2009-2010 school year.

As education changes, San Juan College continues to offer flexibility in it curriculum. For example, the Physical Therapy Assistant program is offered online and by the traditional classroom method. Health Information Technology includes two specialties: coding and medical transcription. Both are available online. Additionally, many of our classes are hybrids, which include both online and traditional classroom aspects.

If you are wondering why you should choose a career in Health Sciences or Nursing, here are two reasons. All of our majors are projected to have a minimum of 18 percent growth and most will experience growth in excess of 26 percent. This equates to job security through the next 20 years or more. The second reason is the satisfaction you experience in being a member of the health care delivery team. Your job will change lives for the better on a daily basis.

In the School of Health Sciences our outstanding faculty prepares you to pass local, regional, and national boards. This gives you the opportunity to obtain a high paying job locally or any place through out the country and even overseas.

On Tuesday, March 4th, our Board approved plans for a new simulation center. Here students will experience the latest and most innovative teaching technology. Students will practice simulations in “real life” situations that will test and reinforce the many skills required in their chosen profession.

If you are looking for a challenge that will pay off financially and personally, please contact the individual departments within the School of Health Sciences. If you do not know which field best suits you, consider taking Introduction to Allied Health next semester. Are you still in High School? Contact your schools Technical Education Guidance Counselor or the Technical Education Center (TEC) here at San Juan College. We offer courses in EMS Education and Certified Nursing Assistant to help you get a head start in your career in health care. No matter which path you choose here at San Juan College, you will begin a journey that will generate lifelong opportunities and to grow personally and professionally.

We hope to see you soon and will be happy to assist you in any way we can.
