Register now through August 15 for Saturday College at San Juan College East and earn your Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts in two years.
Saturday College classes start August 23. Classes will be offered in an 8-week model leading to an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts. Each three credit class meets for two hours at San Juan College East campus on Saturdays, and the remaining coursework will be offered and completed online.
Ideally, students will take two, 8-week courses at a time and will be able to complete 12 credits per semester. Through intensive advising and additional online courses, students will be able to complete the Liberal Arts Degree in two years.
Saturday College courses will be open to all students, including high school students taking dual credit courses and those working toward other degrees.
“The model was developed in response to survey data showing that students and community members would like to see weekend scheduling,” says Lisa Wilson, San Juan College associate vice president for Learning. “The Saturday College classes will provide both interactive, community-building, face-to-face course activities with the flexibility of an online course.
Instructors are versed in both classroom teaching and the College’s new online course management system, Canvas, allowing for state-of-the-art online course delivery.
“We are starting the program with standard general education courses required for almost all students seeking degrees, but future scheduling will be based on students’ needs and interests,” says Wilson.
San Juan College East will dedicate its entire facility to the program on Saturdays, providing a personalized, supportive environment. The location is convenient to students commuting from southwest Colorado. A computer lab will be available for students to work on their coursework both individually and with classmates. Childcare will be available on site.
Marti Kirchmer, director of San Juan College East, will serve as an advisor for the program. Advisors from SJC’s Center for Advising and Counseling can also advise students for Saturday College.
“We are excited to offer this new pathway to degree completion for our students and community members,” says Wilson. “I believe it offers the best of both the interactive classroom and online environments.”
