San Juan College welcomes author Dr. Andi Penner back to campus
San Juan College is pleased to welcome former English instructor and author Dr. Andi Penner on Thursday, March 7 in the Black Box Theatre at 5:30 p.m. for a reading of her new poetry book When East was North.
Penner came to New Mexico in 1994 from California after several years in Flagstaff, Ariz., to pursue her PhD in English at UNM. She completed her dissertation on Native American women writers and relocated to Farmington to teach technical writing and other courses at San Juan College before returning to Albuquerque almost two years ago.
This is Penner’s first collection of poetry and was published by Mercury Heartlink. Penner said the collection is very personal but accessible. Penner explores contrasting relationships – the brief fragility of some, the enduring power of other. When East was North introduces readers to a wider world and a vast cast of characters including a San Quentin prisoner, a gold miner in South Africa and female victims of war.
