Earth and Sky Show
Jazz Morgan and Chyako Hashimoto
August 14 - September 7, 2006
August 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The San Juan College Henderson Fine Arts Gallery will be presenting their latest instillation entitled “Earth and Sky”. Featuring the art of painter Jazz Morgan and Potter Chyako Hashimoto. The exhibit will run from August 14 to September 7with a reception on August 18, from 6-8 p.m.. Jazz Morgan received her formal art training at the State University of New York. The paintings are influenced in content and style by the Japanese and Yup’ik culture. A sense of spirit and place is created using the Zen concept of empty space, isolating gestures and suggesting rather that defining nature’s energies. The work is contemporary. Mixed media on paper and oil on canvas, juxtapose formal and precise drawing, quiet sumi ink work, with spontaneous and seemingly random brush strokes, and raw powerful, almost abstract elements.
Chayko Hasimoto is a graduate from Fort Lewis College. The sculptures featured in this exhibit represent a very different direction for Hashimoto, who, after the death of her father began to contemplate the idea/reality of crossing over. Hashimoto also began to practice sitting meditation, a practice which is not unlike the process of creating her most recent works. “With my art, I decided to give myself permission to go where I wanted, moment to moment; to let the deeper mind express itself without conscious interference. This act is a meditation in itself…. These sculptures are about the moment; they are to be simply felt and experienced.”
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday. The Art Gallery is closed on weekends. For more information call (505) 566-3464.
