The mission of the San Juan College Honors program is:
- To promote critical thinking and higher level learning among students and others who are prepared for and seeking those challenges
- To provide learning opportunities in cross-disciplinary and innovative, creative environments beyond the traditional curriculum
- To better prepare students for their careers, for scholarship opportunities, and for transfer to four year institutions
Honors courses are offered each semester and are available to all students. Honors sections of core courses may be substituted for regular sections. Honors special topics courses will fulfill elective credits toward graduation.
The Honors Program sponsors students to attend academic conferences and to participate in field trips. Additionally, there are Service Learning opportunities for Honors students as well as enriched classroom study through primary and independent research and seminars.
Students who complete 12 hours of Honors courses with no grade less than 3.0 in an Honors course, a cumulative grade point average in all Honors courses of no less than a 3.25, and a cumulative grade point average of no less than a 3.25 overall will graduate as a San Juan College Distinguished Scholar.
Distinguished Scholars receive special recognition at graduation, and their status as an Honors graduate is permanently recorded on their transcript.
