Gainful Employment Information

The Department of Education requires institutions to disclose to current and prospective students the program cost, on-time completion rate, placement rate, median loan debt, and other key performance information for programs that prepare students for gainful employment in recognized occupations (75 FR 66832).

The intent of these disclosure regulations is to provide prospective students and other interested parties with information needed to make an informed choice about a program of study; however, there are significant differences in the missions of higher education institutions that are not apparent in the data we are being asked to report. Community colleges are open access institutions that provide services designed to meet the varying needs of its student population, including remedial education courses, career exploration opportunities, and evening and weekend programs for working adults. As a result, community college students’ course-taking and completion patterns are quite different from those of university students, and viewers are encouraged to exercise caution when interpreting this information or comparing information between institutions.

Where available, related student progress and success data generated by the program and reported to their accrediting body is also provided here. The intent of this additional information is to accommodate different data definitions required by specialized accrediting bodies, and/or to draw appropriate distinctions based upon institutional mission and the student populations that we serve.

On-Time Graduation Rate

The number of students who have completed a program of study and graduated within normal time, as a percentage of the total number of program graduates during the award year. To be counted as completing on time, a student must complete their program of study within its normal time, beginning from the date the student began attending the institution (i.e., institution start term). Normal time applies, regardless of whether the student transferred into the institution or changed programs while enrolled at the institution. Normal time is defined as the amount of time necessary for the student to complete the degree or certificate as provided in the institution's publications (e.g., catalog, promotional materials). This is typically two years for an associate's degree.

Title IV Debt (Federal Loans)

The Median Title IV Debt is derived from the total Title IV loan debt of the program graduates that was incurred while they were enrolled in the program. If the program had no graduates during the award year being reported, this amount will be zero. Median Title IV Debt includes all loans provided under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program; excludes Parent PLUS loans and TEACH grants that have been converted to Unsubsidized Direct Loans, and also excludes Federal Perkins Loans.

The Median Other Educational Debt is derived from the total loan debt of the program graduates that was incurred while they were enrolled in the program. General Fees are determined by multiplying the in-state general fee per credit hour by the minimum number of credit hours required to complete the program. This number is based on the fall's general fee rage of the current award year being reported in this Program Cost section. Program Fees are determined by summing the fees associated with the courses required to complete the program. (Program fees associated with elective courses are not included in the calculation.)

The books and supplies figure is not program specific. It is an average of expected books and supplies costs as researched and determined by the Financial Aid office on a bi-annual basis. The average is calculated through a review of full-time student schedules and the required books and supplies to meet course requirements in a variety of programs. Actual books and supplies costs will vary depending on actual program of study and personal purchasing decisions (new vs. used books; online purchases, etc.)

Room and board costs are not program specific. It is an average of expected living costs in the Four Corners area as researched by the Financial Aid office on a bi-annual basis. The number used is for our most typical student-independent, living off campus, and not with parent(s). This average is used for all students fitting this typical living arrangement while attending SJC regardless of program of study. Actual living costs will vary depending on an individual student's personal living situation and geographic location.
