Intructional Design

What is it?

Instructional design is the practice of arranging media and content so that it helps learners and educators transfer knowledge most effectively. The process consists broadly of determining the current state of learner understanding, defining the end goal of instruction, and creating some media-based "intervention" to assist in the transition. Ideally the process is informed by pedagogically tested theories of learning and may take place in student-only, teacher-led or community-based settings.

This means, that in order to create the best possible course, a team of experienced professionals work together to produce a college level course.   • the School Dean identifies a course to be developed or revised
  • the School Dean identifies a subject matter expert (SME) to work on the course
  • the Dean completes the Online Course Development form or the Online Course Revision form

  • the completed form is approved by the Dean of the School of Extended Learning
  • the form is sent, with a priority assigned, to the Manager of Online Services
  • a Program Manager is assigned to identify, with the SME to form the development/revision team
  • after determining the team, they will meet and determine the timeline for completion of the course
  • the Program Manager oversees the development/revision process is the primary contact person for stakeholders, providing updates as necessary
  • the course is completed and reviewed
  • final changes and adjustments are made
  • the course is offered online.

This process is used to insure that all of the necessary resources are fully used in the course development/revision process.
