Developing the Next Generation Workforce
There are many ways that businesses can help to develop students. Here are just a few of them:
MS Career Fair - Wheels to Work ] San Juan College teams up with the middle schools in San Juan County to create a large middle school career fair called "Wheels to Work". This fair, which is held in September and is intended to:
- Assist young people in career exploration
- Help students to see how important their education is to the process
- Reinforce the danger of drugs to their future employment
Since this is a young audience a "hook" is needed to get them excited about the event. It was decided that wheels would be the hook. Businesses that have wheels related to careers can be a draw for the students and a way to begin a career discussion. The wheels don’t have to be just cars and trucks; sometimes there is a piece of equipment or a tool that has a wheel, for example: a wheelchair, a surveyor’s measuring wheel, an office chair on rollers, some companies have even brought a model or picture of the wheel, use your imagination.

Career Check - A Career Information Fair that is a half-day event, for high school and college students. Students are invited to come to San Juan College’s main campus. They have an opportunity to visit with 50-60 business representatives. The businesses set up a table/booth and talk to students about what it takes to be successful within a given career. Companies do not recruit employees at this event, but provide career information to students about their industry. Students obtain an understanding of what it takes emotionally, physically and educationally to be successful. They also learn about salary ranges and a typical day on the job in a variety of careers. Hundreds of high school and college students attend this event.
