Biography

Chris has two roles at the college, teaching College Success courses and Outdoor Leadership & Education and Recreation programs.

As a lover of the outdoors he can’t decide if he enjoys climbing or skiing more. The quest for an answer has taken him from the world’s great snowy places (Himalaya, Alaska, Andes) to more sunny spots like Yosemite’s El Capitan.  To fund “research” into this dilemma he’s taught mountaineering for Colorado Outward Bound, ski patrolled for Beaver Creek, taught English in Japan, and written for Skiing and Climbing magazines.  Along the way he discovered his other calling in life: teaching.

He has earned numerous teaching awards including the 2010 Annabelle R. Friddle Award for Faculty Excellence and the 2010-12 SJC Distinguished Teaching Chair.  Chris also holds American Mountain Guide Association Single Pitch Instructor, Avalanche Level II, Wilderness First Responder and other outdoor certifications.

Chris is also the very active in SJC's Global Studies program, and has successfully led travel study courses to Tibet, Japan, Germany, Mexico, and Alaska.
