Why major in Computer Science
at San Juan College?

Our Computer Science A.S. degree program was rated the best “by far” in two-year colleges in New Mexico by the Computer Science Department at New Mexico State University. Computer Scientists, programmers, and Software Engineers are in high demand, there is strong anticipated growth in these job areas, and salaries are very good.

The faculty at San Juan College is dedicated to classroom teaching. There is a good ratio of faculty to students so that lots of individualized attention is available to each student. Courses are scheduled to meet the needs of our students and computer science class meeting times are usually determined by a vote of current students in planning the next course in the sequence.

Our degree and certificate programs are quite complete and cover the basics of computer science and programming. Our graduates who transfer to 4-year schools do very well at those institutions. We have an honors program at San Juan College and any student from SJC graduating with honors is automatically entitled to a $1000.00 scholarship at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. This award is an annual award for each year the student attends Fort Lewis College. There are several Computer Science honors courses available.

There are a great many success stories among our graduates. A number of them are programmers here and in other parts of the country. Many work in local companies in various capacities in computing and IT fields. For more details on our students and their accomplishments refer to the link on the main Computer Science page named “SJC Computer Science students, graduates, transfers to 4-year schools, jobs.”
