The OLER Student Orientation is designed to introduce students to the Mission, Policies Practices and Expectations required to be successful in the OLER program. It is also an excellent way for new and senior OLER Students to meet and begin to build camaraderie. The entire class will be held in the field and will cover basic backcountry and survival skills. This is a requirement for all first year OLER students and is highly recommended for all OLER students even as a repeat. Class will meet at 8:00 am on Friday August 21 and return from the field outing at approximately 6:00 on Sunday August 23.
OLER 175-001 ACA Swift Water Rescue 1 Credit

This course is aimed at trip leaders, boaters paddling on more challenging whitewater, and anyone desiring opportunities to develop their rescue skills. Critical judgment and rescue awareness, impacting both personal and group safety, are emphasized throughout the course. Although new skills may be taught, this class focuses on developing judgment and applying skills in rescue scenarios. Scope and content of the course will vary, based upon participant needs, interests and experience. Course meets in classroom on Friday, August 28 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Field sessions are: Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Class is designed to introduce students to the skills of backpacking, navigation, equipment, safety and backcountry travel in a friendly and comfortable environment. Class meets on the following dates: Tuesday, September 15, from 5:30 pm to7:30 pm. Overnight trip will be held on: Friday September 18 through Sunday, September 20. Course fee of $30.00 covers cost of food, transportation, supplies, and equipment. Fee is non-refundable after first day of class.

Challenge Course I is an exceptional introduction to the philosophy and use of Experiential Education in the learning environment. This course is designed for managers, teachers, administrators, human service professionals and outdoor practitioners who are interested in learning the fundamentals of challenge training activities, group process, facilitation and application. The program is designed to lay a solid foundation for the development of safe effective, outdoor experiential programs. Class meets on Mondays, August 24th through October 19th from 5:30pm to 8:15pm. Field sessions will be held on: Sundays, September 13, 20, and October 4, 11, from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

This is an introductory level course with a focus on developing skills related to planning, organizing and executing a backcountry outing. Topics covered will include: trip planning and organization; clothing and equipment selection; low impact camping and permitting; menu planning; site selection and set-up; introductory route-finding and navigation; expedition behavior and safety in a wilderness environment. This is a must for students hoping to become guides, wilderness instructors or counselors. Class meets on the following dates: Wednesdays, October 7 through November 4, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Multi-day overnight trips will be held on: Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18 and Friday, October 30 through Sunday November 1. Course fee of $60.00 covers cost of food and supplies. OLER 155-001 Intro to Gym Climbing (1 credit)

This course is designed for the beginning climber or for the climber who wishes to gain a review of the basics of climbing in an indoor climbing gym setting. This course will cover the topics and skills necessary to safely Boulder, Top Rope, and Lead Climbing at the HPC Climbing Facility. Class meets on the following dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 25 through September 10, from 3:00pm to 4:15pm. Course Fee of $45.00 will pay for a membership at the Health and Human Performance Center. Fee is non-refundable after first day of class.
OLER 156-001 Rock Climbing 2 (credit)

This course covers the fundamentals of rock climbing. Students will experience climbing at the SJC Indoor Climbing Facility and outdoor locations, learning equipment selection and usage, belay techniques, anchor systems and climbing skills. This course will meet Physical Education activity requirement for AA degree. Class meets on the following dates: Tuesdays, September 22 through October 27, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Field session will be held on Saturdays, October 4 and 10, from 8:00 to 6:00 pm. Overnight trip will be Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25. OLER 130-001 Wilderness/Environmental Ethics (2 credit)

This course is an introduction and overview of ethical practices and behavior for anyone utilizing wilderness resources. Topics of study will include low impact camping and traveling methods, history of environmental and wilderness ethics, and current issues in the outdoor recreation industry. This class includes LNT Trainers certification upon successful completion. Class meets on the following dates: Wednesdays, September 2 through September 30, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Field session will be held on Saturday, September 12 and 19 from 8:00 to 5:00 pm. Multi-Day Overnight Trip will be held on: Friday September 25 through Sunday, September 27. Course fee of $45.00 covers cost of Leave No Trace membership, food, transportation, and supplies. Fee is non-refundable after first day of class.
OLER 150-001 Wilderness First Aid (1 credit)

This class goes beyond that of traditional first aid in that it addresses how to handle medical situations in remote wilderness settings. Lectures are combined with practical applications through a variety of hands-on simulations and activities. This course is highly recommended for guides, trip leaders, camp counselors, hunters, rescue team members, outdoor recreation enthusiasts and anyone who spends considerable time in the wilderness or other remote settings. Upon successful completion, student will be certified in Wilderness First Aid through Wilderness Medicine Training Center (WMTC). Class meets on the following dates: Friday, November 6 through Sunday November 8, from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Course Fee of $75.00 will pay for certification and books. Fee is non-refundable 30 days prior to fist day of class.

The Mountain Biking course is designed to expose students to the sport of mountain biking and the mountain biking Mecca of Moab, UT. Class will accommodate beginner to advanced riders looking to improve skills and have a fun weekend of adventure. Class meets on the following dates: Tuesday, November 10, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Overnight trip will be held on: Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15. Course fee of $60.00 covers cost of food, transportation, supplies, and equipment. Fee is non-refundable after first day of class.

This class is designed for climbers looking to take the next step into Traditional Lead Climbing. Class will be held in the HHPC Climbing Gym and the weekend outing will be to one of the exceptional climbing areas in the 4 corners. Participants must have prior climbing experience and a passion for rock climbing. Class meets on the following dates: Wednesday November 11 and 18, from 5:30-8:30 pm. Overnight trip will be held on: Friday, November 20 through Sunday, November 22. Course fee of $30.00 covers cost of food, transportation, supplies, and equipment. Students must have permission from the instructor to register. Fee is non-refundable after first day of class.

Three pitches up, the leader is thirty meters out on a fifty meter rope, they fall and are caught on a good piece of gear out of your view. You yell! No response, you yell again, only a groan this time! Do you know what to do? Could you deal with the technical aspects of a complex rope rescue? Be safe, be secure and be self sufficient on your climbs. Learn the basics of self and partner rescue on the rock. This course covers the skills every climber that ties into a rope should know and focuses on self rescue in any climbing situation. The course emphasizes reducing the risks in the first place, teaching new, clever systems and tricks to stay safe. We will teach you the best, most efficient systems and won't flood you with over complicated systems. Topics to be covered will include Basic gear for rescue, anchors, Escaping the system, raises and Lowers, Problem situations, Multi-pitch, traverses and will include scenarios to aide in the learning process. Students are required to have climbing and rope management experience. Instructor’s approval required to enroll!
