general technical requirements for using angel

For Windows-based computers {For Mac}

NOTE: Mozilla Firefox is the recommended off-campus browser for ANGEL. If you experience technical difficulties with ANGEL and are using Internet Explorer, please try Firefox* instead. Google Chrome is NOT a supported browser on Windows PCs.

*Firefox is a free browser and can be downloaded from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/. To install Firefox, save the installation file to your PC desktop. then double-click the file to begin installation and follow the on-screen prompts.

Please check the following system requirements to ensure accessibility to your ANGEL courses:

  • ACCESS: High speed Internet access - DSL, Satellite/Cable Broadband or Mobile DSL recommended. Dial-up connections are not reliable and therefore not recommended.
  • OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 (LINUX OS and variations may work, but are not supported or recommended).
  • BROWSER: Internet Explorer 7 or higher or Mozilla Firefox 2 or higher (IE 6, Firefox 1.x and Google Chrome are not supported or recommended).
  • SOFTWARE: Most courses require some assignments to be word-processed outside of ANGEL. San Juan College faculty will only accept work created in Microsoft Office or software capable of saving as an MS Office file (this link has more information). Some courses may require additional software or purchase of an access code to open publisher content.
  • OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT: Computer speakers or headset - Many courses include videos or audio lectures which require use of speakers or headset. Microphone or headset with microphone - A microphone may be required if your course includes live audio chat or audio responses. You can purchase a computer headset with microphone at most office
    supply or electronics stores.

If your system does NOT meet the requirements outlined in the ANGEL system check, follow the steps below:

  1. Determine which browser and version you are using.
    • In Internet Explorer, select Help from the menu bar and click About Internet Explorer from the menu. You will see the version of Internet Explorer displayed in the Version field.
    • In Firefox, select Help, then About Mozilla Firefox. The version number is located on the Firefox image that appears.
  2. If you have any X marks appearing on your system check nugget, click on the X below next to the system requirement you have not met for instructions on how to update your computer.

System Requirement List

AJAX (XMLHttpRequest)

AJAX (XMLHttpRequest) must be supported and enabled. The following browsers support AJAX:

  • Microsoft Internet Exporer (6.0 and higher)
  • Mozilla Firefox (1.x and higher)

Most of the time you will not need to worry about this requirement. Most browsers support AJAX automatically.

ENABLE COOKIES

To enable cookies, follow the instructions below for the browser version you are using.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (6.0 and higher)

  1. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu.
  2. Click on the Privacy tab.
  3. Click the Default button (or manually slide the bar down to Medium) under Settings.
  4. Click OK.

Mozilla Firefox (1.x and higher)

  1. Go to the Tools menu.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Select the Privacy icon in the left panel.
  4. Check the box corresponding to Allow sites to set cookies.
  5. Click OK to save changes.

ENABLE JAVA

To verify that you have java installed, go to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and click Verify Installation.

Download the latest java plugin: http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

To enable java on your computer:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (6.0 and higher)

  1. From the Tools menu select Internet Options.
  2. Select the Security tab and then the Custom Level option.
  3. Scroll down the dialogue box to Microsoft VM.
  4. Select either Low safety, Medium safety or High safety.
  5. Click the OK button (or press Enter).
  6. Choose Yes in the alert box.
  7. Click the OK button (or press Enter).

Mozilla Firefox (1.x and higher)

  1. From the Edit menu select Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced category.
  3. Make sure the Enable Java option has it's box checked.

ENABLE JAVASCRIPT

Download the latest java plugin: http://www.java.com/en/

Internet Explorer (6.0 and higher)

  1. Select Tools from the top menu.
  2. Choose Internet Options.
  3. Click Security.
  4. Click Custom Level.
  5. Scroll down till you see section labeled Scripting.
  6. Under Active Scripting, select Enable and click OK.

Internet Explorer (7.0 and higher)

  1. Select Tools > Internet Options.
  2. Click on the Security tab.
  3. Click the Custom Level button.
  4. Scroll down to the Scripting section.
  5. Select Enable for Active Scripting and Scripting of Java Applets.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Select YES if a box appears to confirm.
  8. Click OK. Close window.
  9. Reload page.

Mozilla Firefox (1.x)

  1. Select Tools from the top menu.
  2. Choose Options.
  3. Choose Web Features from the left navigation bar.
  4. Select the checkbox next to Enable JavaScript and click OK.

Mozilla Firefox (2.x and higher)

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click Content in the Options list.
  4. Under the Content section, check the box next to Enable JavaScript.
  5. Click the Advanced button to open the Advanced JavaScript Options box.
  6. Check the appropriate boxes under Allow scripts to.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.

Please keep in mind that upgrading your browser or installing new security software or security patches may affect your JavaScript settings.

NOTE: The Safari, Omni, and Google Chrome browsers are not supported in ANGEL. It is strongly suggested that you use Firefox* or the Camino broswer only.

*Firefox is a free browser and can be downloaded from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/. To install Firefox, save the installation file to your PC desktop. then double-click the file to begin installation and follow the on-screen prompts.

  1. You must be using MAC with a G4 processor or higher running OS 10.x.
  2. Use the FireFox Browser: http://www.firefox.com. Alternatively, use the Camino Browser: http://caminobrowser.org/download/.
    Although you will be able to view ANGEL Courses using Safari, Google or Omni Web browsers, you will have difficulty using certain ANGEL features such as the HTML Editor or submitting quizzes and tests.
  3. Browser Setup:
    MUST allow cookies
    Select Firefox > Preferences > Privacy> Cookies
    Make sure the checkbox to accept cookies is checked.
  4. MUST allow Java & JavaScript
    From the main menu Select Firefox > Preferences > Content
    Make sure Java is checked.
  5. MUST allow pop ups
    From the main menu, Select Firefox > Preferences > Content
    Either uncheck pop-up blockers, or click the Exceptions button and add ANGEL (https://angel.sanjuancollege.edu) to the allowed sites.
  6. Before accessing Angel, please have the latest Java installed on your Mac:
    http://www.java.com
  7. Before accessing Angel, please install this plug-in on your Mac:
    Java Embedding Plugin for MacOSX
    http://javaplugin.sourceforge.net
    This will allow you to use chat, the whiteboard, and learner profile options.
