Health Care Careers are rewarding and in high demand. But exploring your many health care options can be a bit overwhelming. What careers are available? How can you afford your education? What paperwork do you need to complete to begin the processes?

The SJC Pathways Health Care Community Workshops will bring the answers to these questions to you! Workshops will be offered in a variety of communities and chapter houses throughout the four corners regions.

Each workshop will begin with three short presentations:

Exploring Health Care Opportunities. College faculty and staff will explain the different health care education options available to you through San Juan College. You will learn more about educational requirements for each profession, as well as pay-scale and job availability.

Financial Aid Opportunities. Financial Aid and Advising Staff will explain the different types of financial aid available to you, as well as the processes for applying for each. Sources of funding include Federal Aid, State Aid, SJC Foundation Scholarships, Native American Scholarships and Health Care Scholarships.

Support Resources at SJC. During this presentation, you will learn about the many support services you will access at San Juan College. Among others, services include free academic tutoring, academic advising, personal counseling, career advisement and student activities.

Following the initial presentations, participants will break into two small groups. The first group will be for high school seniors, high school graduates and GED recipients. During these small group meetings, you will learn more about:

Admissions Applications and Enrollment Processes. We’ll bring SJC Applications for Admission, and help you complete them. We’ll discuss other processes such as placement assessments, new student orientation and transcripts. By the time you leave this workshop, you will already have begun your educational experience!

Financial Aid Advising. We’ll help you begin the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and provide you with a few scholarship applications. We’ll present you with tips on completing scholarship essays and researching funding sources.

Academic Advising. Working together, we will work out a general plan for your education. You will learn which courses you will likely take during which semesters. From this session, you will have an accurate assessment of how long your education will take, so that you make plans accordingly.

The second small group will be for high school freshman, sophomores, juniors and parents. During these small group meetings, you will learn more about:

Exploring Health Care Careers: During this session, you will learn a few important tips for how to investigate and select the health care career that fits your goals and personality.

Early Academic Planning: Once you know what fields you may want to enter, the next step is crucial… you need to start planning now. What classes should you take in high school? What activities should you participate? How can you begin building your health care experiences before graduating from high school? You will learn all of this and more!

Community Workshops will be held beginning in the summer of 2009. Check back here for a schedule in May, or email us to be placed on a mailing list (we’ll send you an updated schedule via email once it is finalized).
