Artist Statement – Nikki Smith
Painting has been a major part of my life, seems like forever. The first thing people always say is that I am so diversified in subject matter. That’s very true, but to me the beauty in everything around us is diversified; I can’t stick to painting just one subject. So whatever I see on a certain day that catches my eye – that’s what goes on the next canvas. I suppose I do more portraits than anything else, mainly because of my nonprofit foundation Artists Against Drunk Driving. I do all the innocent victims killed by drunk drivers and give them to their families after touring the schools and DWI programs.
I’ve been very fortunate in my art, as I have done paintings for two of our Presidents at the White House while they were in office – Reagan and Ford – and have had an extensive European Tour of my art, which was also exciting. I hope people enjoy my work as much as I enjoy doing it.
The Humanities Art Gallery is located in the Humanities balcony in the West Classroom Complex.
It is open Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
