Industrial Apprenticeship Training Program

The School of Energy, in partnership with PNM, oversees training for the apprenticeship program at PNM’s San Juan Generating Station.

The San Juan College School of Energy, in a partnership with PNM, will oversee the training for the apprenticeship program at San Juan Generating Station.

This apprenticeship is designed to provide the student/apprentice with the necessary knowledge and skills to advance to a journeyman position as an operator in the environmental or generation departments or as a journeyman industrial mechanic in the maintenance department. The apprenticeship training is a combination of Cooperative Education and General Education. Each apprentice must complete 2000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT), and a minimum of 144 hours of classroom training each year of their apprenticeship. Eighty percent of the apprentices entering this program are graduates from the School of Energy Industrial Process Operator Program. The apprentice will be placed into the program at the appropriate year depending on their experience and assessment.

Each apprentice will work with a qualified journeyman operator or mechanic throughout the duration of his or her program. They will learn about and work on numerous systems that are essential to plant operations. Upon completion, they will be expected to demonstrate their skills and knowledge before they achieve journeyman status.
