Introduction to the Hospitality Industry
This class applies to newcomers who want to learn every facet of their job responsibilities- as well as veteran hospitality workers who want to update their skills. Learn about the exciting world of hospitality and how important this industry is to the success of the State of NM and tourism as a whole.

WaiterWith more than 200 different job opportunities, the $103.6 billion hospitality industry has a career to fit every interest. Jobs are available in restaurants, hotels, resorts, casinos and other areas. Types of positions range from entry-level to supervisory and managerial positions, including hotel, food and beverage, casino and resort operations.

The hospitality industry has a long history of promoting from within, and stories abound of people who have risen from the ranks of entry-level employees to become general managers, corporate executives, or owners of their own properties. In this course participants will gain an understanding of basic hotel management, administration, accounting, maintenance, sales and catering; including an in-depth look at the most common entry-level hospitality positions such as:

  • Guest Services
  • Housekeeping
  • Food and Beverage

Introduction to LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
This introductory course is tailored to address the fundamental concepts for sustainable design and construction (green building) and how it produces a quality environment. Participants will view the roles of the different professional groups that are involved with the LEED program from residential home owners, realtors, developers, contractors, architects, and engineers. Participants will also understand the importance of design, construction, and owner involvement as a working team from initial conception to final product.

The course highlights:

  • Sustainable building design categories with some special emphasis on SWPPP, renewable energy, and recycling.
  • Various rating systems and how they can contribute to our community. Emphasis on commercial, institutional, secondary schools, and housing developments.
  • "Energy Star" energy efficient products and practices
  • See how LEED was implemented for several projects in the Four Corners area and the benefits attained.
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED / AP's) and their roles and how their profession has evolved and how to become a LEED / AP
  • LEED / AP Credentialing Maintenance & continued professional development

Storm Water Management During Construction:
Erosion and Sediment Control
This program has been developed as guidance for the proper installation, inspection, and maintenance of Best Management Practices (BMP's) for the control of erosion and sedimentation at sites that have construction activity.

  • The Stormwater Program including Stormwater Management Plans (SWMP)/ Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)
  • Erosion and Sedimentation at construction sites
  • Types of BMP's for specific conditions designed to control erosion and sedimentation.
  • Installation of construction site BMP's
  • Inspecting and maintaining installed BMP's
