New or First Time Degree Seeking Students

A first time Degree seeking college student is a student who has never attended any college before. (As a high school student, if you took dual credit or concurrent enrollment courses, you are considered a first time student).

Request an Official Transcript

High school/GED transcripts must be sent to the Enrollment Services Office. Your high school transcript MUST include your graduation date. Transcripts must arrive at the Enrollment Services office (mailed or hand delivered) in a SEALED envelope from the originating institution OR if the issuing institution has the ability to issue e-transcripts, they can send the transcript to No Financial Aid funds will be released until your transcripts have been received.

Apply for Financial Aid

Please submit your Financial Aid application online at Instructions and help with financial aid questions and for filling out forms can be found over the internet , by phone (505) 566-3512, or in person at the Financial Aid Office.

Smarter Measure

Smarter Measure is a Learning Readiness Indicator assessment meant to be an interesting experience by which you may learn more about yourself. It will take 30 minutes to complete. You only need to complete areas 1-5. Go to to complete this.

New Student Orientation

All First Time Freshmen must attend New Student Orientation (NSO). To get registered for a session either face-to-face or online please call (505) 566-3378.  

Complete the Accuplacer 

The Accuplacer tests you in Math, English and Reading to determine which level you need to begin in.

To schedule an exam appointment and complete the preregistration, go to the Testing Center webpage ( In the blue box, click on ACCUPLACER. Take the Accuplacer on your scheduled test day/time at the SJC Testing Center, which is located in the Information Technology Center (Copper Top Building), RM 7120D. Contact the SJC Testing Center with any testing questions at (505) 566-3139.

If you are unable to come to campus for testing because you are a distance student, go to Distance Accuplacer for more information. 

Students who may need testing accommodations or have questions about the Accuplacer requirement may contact the Disability Services Office at (505) 566-3643.

Meet with an Academic Advisor

After you complete the Accuplacer assessment, you will need to meet with an advisor to go over scores and discuss course options and degree plans. Appointments can be made by calling the Advising and Counseling Center at (505) 566 – 3526.

Register for courses

Register for courses using the Academic Planning tool found in the student portal.  Registration dates are posted on the Academic Calendar.

Pay your Tuition 

It is your responsibility to know the tuition deadline and to pay for your classes by that date. Please check the Academic Calendar  for information concerning tuition dates and deadlines. Automatic payment plans are available through the Student Payment Plan. Additionally, tuition can be paid over the internet, by phone (505) 566-3396, or in person at the Business Office. Questions? Buy your Books 

You should purchase your books prior to the first day of class. Go to the Bookstore website for more information
