Painting is a way to communicate without using words. Each painting is a story, perhaps about the change of seasons, an anecdote about an animal or the infinite history of the Grand Canyon. Maybe it is a legend about a romantic vista or a tale about the warmth turning cold as the red evening light fades from a snow-covered mountain. As an artist, it is my job to capture the viewer's attention by the contrasts in the painting, lead the eyes across the composition, direct them to the center of interest, and guide them gently into seeing the story that I saw, the inspiration that led me to choose that particular scene as my subject matter. If the viewer reads and comprehends my story, then I have succeeded in my artistic task.
