Dale Latta - photo courtesy of artist
Latta bases his paintings on photographs of anonymous subjects conducting their daily lives against the onslaught of modern culture. He alters each photo on the computer, then transfers the image to canvas using a grid. The painting begins with a thin layer of acrylic to establish the color. The work is finished with thick, loosely applied oil in saturated hues. The images appear photographic from a distance, but upon closer inspection break up into brushstrokes and color. This process gives equal weight to all elements in the composition, which yields an interesting tension between the surface and subject matter. Latta says, “I derive meaning from the chaos and alienation of contemporary existence by distilling this experience into iconic imagery.” His influences come from a range of modern and post-modern painters including Edward Hopper, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, and Chuck Close.
Encouraged by his talented mother, he began drawing at an early age. 1977 - BFA Emporia State University; 1977 - 1978 - graduate work as a teaching assistant, Fort Hays State University; returned to school to earn a Master’s degree in special education; 1990 - acquired a certification in Art Education.
He began teaching in 1983. Latta is currently the art instructor at Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, New Mexico.
