I am a retired medical doctor, and at heart I am an outdoorsman. I find painting beautiful scenes out in the open air a very personal and emotional experience. I thank God for the blessings of being able to experience beautiful scenes visually and emotionally and for the ability to record these experiences in oil on canvas. Most of my painting is done in and around Farmington and the surrounding Four Corners Area. I never stop marveling at the unparalleled beauty of the unique and varied landscapes that exist in the Southwest. I paint in an impressionistic/realistic style. As I paint, my goal is to emphasize the beauty of a scene and, in the process, emphasize the effects on the land brought about by the bright sun and the clear high-desert sky.
West was a physician in private parctice until his retirement in 1998. Beginning in 1998, he attended week long landscape painting workshops in the late summer or early fall at the Fechin Institute in Taos, New Mexico, the Taos Institute of Arts and the Loveland Art Academy in Loveland, Colorado. He has also taken workshops at the Gateway Museum and at San Juan College in Farmington, NM.
Community Involvement / Other Accomplishments
I grew up in Aurora, Colorado, which was, during those years, a small farming and ranching community. Our home backed up to acres of as yet unbroken natural prairie. In those days the air was crystal clear. Each morning we were greeted by the awesome magnificence and beauty of the snow-capped front range of the Rocky Mountains. I spent long hours exploring the mountains and the prairies, and experiencing the ranches and the farms. I gloried in the discoveries inherent in the vistas and niches of these environments. This deep appreciation for what I beheld and felt, and of how it all fit together, served me well when I began to paint.
