OLER 155-001                   Intro to Gym Climbing                                                                     (1 credit)
This course is designed for the beginning climber or for the climber who needs a review of the basics of TOP ROPE climbing in an indoor climbing gym setting. This course will cover the topics and skills necessary to safely boulder, top rope, and lead climbing at the HHPC climbing wall. Topics include safety, knots, belaying and basic climbing technique. In addition, this course is designed to improve the climbing ability and fitness level of those enrolled. Physical participation is required and students are encouraged to work at their own pace. This course is suitable for all ability levels. Must be 18 years or older to register.

OLER 161-001                   Winter Backcountry Travel                                                           (2 credit)
This course is designed to cover the skills necessary for extended winter camping and travel in the backcountry on snowshoes or backcountry/telemark skis. Basic ski and snowshoe technique will be taught. The class will cover the skills, theory and practices related to winter camping. Student will learn winter equipment selection and usage, snow shelter construction, stoves and cooking, cold related illnesses and avalanche safety.

OLER 299-001                   Cross-Country Skiing                                                                       (.5 credit)
This class will introduce students to the sport of cross-country skiing. During this class we will explore the variation in cross-country skiing equipment. We will also discus safety issues such as avalanches, terrain selection, trip preparation, clothing and winter travel.   We will test out our newly learned skills with ski tours in the local area.

OLER 299-004 and 299/006                           Backcountry Skiing and Snowboarding      (1 credit)
This class will cover winter backcountry travel, safety and equipment while using the comfort and convenience of a Backcountry Yurt. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn to make turns in the untracked powder, assess snow stability and route selection. Participants should have some ski experience and be able to carry a backpack while on skis.

OLER 299-002                   Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding                                                                  (.5 credit)
This clinic will introduce students to the world of Skiing or Snowboarding during the fun and intensive clinic. This clinic will cover personal conditioning, equipment fit and maintenance, technique, safety and endurance. This is an awesome opportunity to learn to ski and snowboard in a fun and friendly environment. This clinic is also early enough in the season that participants will have months to practice.

OLER 220-001                   Challenge Course II                                                                          (3 credit)
The course will begin with a brief review of the history, purpose, and application of challenge courses before transitioning to specific activities involved with the High Challenge Course. Topics include equipment, individual element description and safety, belay techniques, activity introduction and framing, spotting techniques, instructor awareness, activity variations and introductory processing, inspection, maintenance, emergency procedures, participant screening, accident reporting, and rescue skills.

OLER 255-001                   Wilderness First Responder                                                            (3 credit)
This course is designed for students who will be working with groups in the backcountry setting at a professional level. Course content will address the issues of long-term patient care, survival skills and backcountry rescue techniques. Class will be heavily field and scenario based. Upon successful completion, students will be certified as Wilderness First Responders and in CPR through Wilderness Medicine Training Center (WMTC).

OLER 165-001                   Mountaineering                                                                                  (2 credit)
Introduces students to the basic skills of high alpine technical mountaineering. A broad range of skills and knowledge that are essential to the practice of mountaineering will be covered. Topics include the alpine environment, route finding and navigation, movement over snow, ice, and rock, rope systems, equipment selection, safety, and evacuation procedures.

OLER 157-001                   Sport Climbing                                                                                   (1 credit)
Designed for the experienced climber who wishes to gain the knowledge and skill to safely "lead climb" in an indoor and outdoor setting. This course will cover the topics and skills necessary to safely LEAD climb at the HHPC climbing wall. Other topics will include; a review of the basics, lead-climbing safety, belaying the leader, lead climbing technique, falling and advanced climbing technique. This course is designed to improve the climbing ability and fitness level of those enrolled. Prerequisites: OLER 155, OLER 156 or permission of program coordinator.

OLER 299-007   Intro to Sea Kayaking                                                                      (1 credit)
This course is designed to introduce students to the world of Kayak Touring and Sea Kayaking. The class will consist of classroom, pool and lake time and will cover topics including but not limited to kayak navigation, waves, tides and currents, ocean and lake environments, weather, packing, rescues, safety, expedition planning and much more. This is also the recommended pre-requisite for the 7 Day Kayak Expedition Course that will be held early in the summer semester.

Designed to teach the basics of the avalanche phenomenon. Students will learn how to recognize potential hazards and how to evaluate snow pack conditions. The use of avalanche beacons, probe lines and searching techniques will be covered both in classroom sessions and in the field through simulated rescue situations. Upon successful completion of course students will be certified as Avalanche Level 1 through American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE).

OLER 175-001                      ACA Swift Water Rescue                                 (1 Credit)
This course is aimed at trip leaders, boaters paddling on more challenging whitewater, and anyone desiring opportunities to develop their rescue skills. Critical judgment and rescue awareness, impacting both personal and group safety are emphasized throughout the course. Although new technical skills will be taught, this class focuses on developing judgment and applying skills in rescue scenarios. Scope and content of the course will vary, based upon participant needs, interests and experience. This is a ACA sanctioned class and participants who complete the training will receive an ACA Card of completion for SWR level III, IV, V based on performance and aptitude.

OLER 299-003                                                    Ski Mountaineering                            1 Credit
Join this class for the ultimate big mountain riding experience. Class will focus on all aspects of snow riding in difficult, technical and steep terrain. Class will cover avalanche awareness, technical mountaineering skills, steep and powder riding techniques and much more. Class also includes 3 days at a backcountry yurt to access untouched terrain, a full day ski tour in the San Juan’s and one evening at a local ski area. All participants must have mountaineering or climbing experience and must be competent in black terrain at a ski area. All snow riders are welcome to attend.
